BQ25790: About NiMH battery charging

Part Number: BQ25790
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25713

Hi,

Does BQ25790 support NiMH batteries?

BQ25713 series is stated to be compatible with NiMH.
However, BQ25790 does not have NiMH in the correspondence table.
I think it can be dealt with by adjusting the charging voltage.

If the BQ25790 is not suitable for charging NiMH.
Please tell me the reason.

Customer requirement specifications is ;

・Battery : NiMH
・Cell : 10cell , (12V)
・Vin : 12V
・Charge current : ≒2A~

Best regards,
Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke,

    When charging NiMH higher than 0.5C, NiMH battery manufacturers recommend charging with CC, like LiIon batteries, but not terminating with CV and Iterm for LiIon batteries.  So, you can use any LiIon charger's CC loop for fast charge but when terminating (even with BQ25713), it is highly recommended to use an external gauge or precision ADC and host software (and some memory) to monitor the battery's voltage for -dV/dt trend and/or thermistor dT/dt trend when making the termination decision.  BQ25790 has an ADC which reports battery voltage and thermistor temperature (vias TS pin voltage) but TI does not warranty the ADC's accuracy and so cannot recommend using those values for termination.

    Regards,
