UCC28730-Q1: Use UCC28730 instead of TPS40210

Part Number: UCC28730-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40210, UCC28730, LM25180, UCC28910, UCC28700, UCC28911

Hello,

Can you confirm me if possible to use UCC28730 instead of TPS40210?

The price of TPS40210 is high and i need a driver with quasi resonant to increase efficiency. The ideal choice is LM25180. Can you me propose another reference equivalent to LM25180 and the price is lower.

  • Hello Hassan,

Thank you for your interest in TI flyback controllers.

The UCC28730 PSR flyback controller may substitute for the TPS40210 with certain limitations.  The TPS part is intended for low voltage DC input applications, whereas the UCC part is optimized for high-voltage off-line input applications.  The HV start-up FET within the UCC28730 is characterized at a bulk voltage of 100V.  It will allow start-up current at lower voltages, but lower than the specific level and the minimum is unknown.  Empirically, we find it becomes unreliable for start-up below about 30Vdc.    Its operating frequency is variable compared to the TPS's fixed frequency mode.

The UCC28700 PSR controller is similar to the -730 without the integrated HV start-up Fet, so it is a little less expensive. Both -730 and -700 are available in -Q1 automotive grade rating. If an integrated switching MOSFET is required, then none of these options are equivalent to the LM25180.  There are two UCC parts with integrated MOSFET: UCC28910 and UCC28911, but both also come with an integrated HV start-up Fet and have the same low-voltage limitation. Neither of the -910/-911 parts are available with Q100 rating.

    Regards,
    Ulrich
