BQ25171-Q1: Reversing Battery Insertion with Rectifier

Part Number: BQ25171-Q1

Hello:

I have been using the BQ25171 EVM for developing a charger design. I am powering the chip with 5V and charging a single AAA NiMH cell. The basic application works great, but now my client would like to change the design so that the unit containing the battery can be inserted into the charger either way. To accommodate the reversed polarity I would use a diode bridge as shown in the example schematic below. Will this configuration work with the BQ25171? Or will the chip not accurately monitor the battery voltage because of the diode drops? Is there a configuration that can be made to work using the BQ25171?

Thank you.

  • Hello

The device is not designed to support reverse battery option, none of our chargers are.

I think the diode bridge is the right approach.  But as you pointed out voltage drop will be higher and this could lead to early charge termination and battery undercharge.
