UCC28780: About A Single Stage PFC+flyback Converter

Part Number: UCC28780
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28051

Dear Ulrich

I am wondering if I could design a circuit with PFC function using UCC28780.
However, I'm thinking of a one converter, not a two converter.
UCC28780 works in CrM MODE, so I think I can implement PFC function if I can prepare a multiplier.

How about it?

We believe that the one-converter method contributes to downsizing.

The PMP2614 is an isolated opto-less single-stage PFC flyback.

This is an image of adding an active clamp to this circuit.

Or is it more advantageous to adopt the 2-converter method? (due to cost, size, design difficulty...)

It is a power supply with 200W output.

You are a genius, so I would like some helpful advice.

  • Hi, Tak

This is a interesting topic to discuss.

In general, a single stage Flyback controller should be a PFC controller first. That is the same meaning of your comment that if you can prepare a multiplier.

UCC28780 is ACF controller which target for high power density application with GaN, there is no multiplier inside and not design for single stage Flyback.

Actually, UCC28051 is the single stage Flyback controller which  TI is recommending.

  • Hi, Yunsheng

    Thank you for your reply.
I will also consider the device you introduced.
However, the UCC28780 has an active clamping function, which makes it extremely efficient and attractive.
Is it possible for the UCC28780 to have the same PFC functionality as the UCC28051 if I implement a multiplier?

  • Hi, Tak

It is possible for the UCC28780 to have the same PFC functionality as the UCC28051 if you implement a multiplier?

There is no research from TI regarding to this topic, I still recommend to use UCC28051 since single stage PFC is very cost sensitive.
