BQ78350-R1A: BQ78350 cannot enter shutdown mode

Part Number: BQ78350-R1A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78350, BQ76200, BQ76930, BQSTUDIO

Hello Sir:

We are using BQ76930+BQ76200+BQ78350 solutions.

Please refer our schematic and gg file.

If the Pack+ connect a scope or system load, and after we send shutdown command in normal mode that BQ78350 cannot enter shutdown mode.

Please help us to check the gg file and schematic if anything needs to optimize please let us know.

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Is the pack sealed? If so, the Shutdown command needs to be sent 2 times back to back.

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt:

We have sent the shutdown command 2 times back to back, and then the SDM flag is turned on.

Please refer the screenshot that I provided in last conversation.

The other if the PACK is not connected to any device.

We sent shutdown command*2 --- SDM flag turn on --- C-FET and D-FET turn off --- finally device will shutdown.

If the PACK is connected load or scope.

We sent shutdown command*2 --- SDM flag turn on --- C-FET and D-FET turn off --- finally device will return to normal mode.

    Please provide recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Thanks for the explanation. There is a table in the TRM that shows the steps the device goes through to enter Shutdown (see section 17.2.10). If there is any current measured by the device, the device will not enter Shutdown, so the measured current must be zero when you send the Shutdown command. Can you check to see what current is being measured by the BQ78350 in this case?

    Regards,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt:

We have been tried let SRP and SRN floating then short together with a 0 ohm.

But which is not useful for this case.

Please help check our GG file such as quite current, sleep current or something else will effect the current measurement.

Please provide your recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

I don't see any issues in the gg file. Can you confirm the OperationStatus[DSG] bit when the Shutdown command is sent?

  • Hi Matt:

    Please check the screenshot.

The flag XCHG and XDSG are 1, flag DSG is 0 and flag SDM is 1.

Please help to provide your recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

I tested your gg file on an EVM and Shutdown is able to work okay. I did notice that the AFE_OVRD bit is disabled in your Enabled Protections B register. I think you should enable this to see if this protection is triggering. This is an AFE hardware protection which cannot be disabled.

Can you let me know if changing this shows a different result?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt:

    Thanks your recommendation.

We try it and retest but the result is the same with before.

We still cannot enter shutdown mode.

Is there anything else we need to check?

Please provide the recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Can you try capturing a log file (click the 'Start Log' on the Register screen of BQStudio)? You can start the log file and then send the Shutdown command 2 times. This will help show all of the status bits and the measurements seen by the device. Maybe this will help us figure out what is preventing Shutdown.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt:

    Please refer the attached file.

And provide your recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Thanks for sending the log file. It confirms there is no current measured. I was suspecting current was preventing Shutdown initially because you said it is prevented only when PACK+ is connected to a system load or a scope. Positive current through the sense resistor could prevent Shutdown.

The log also shows the device is Sealed (SEC1,SEC0 are both = 1). This requires the Shutdown command be sent 2 times back-to-back. Do you know the time between the 2 Shutdown commands you are sending? I think they need to be within 4 seconds of each other.

    Regards,

    Matt

  • Hello Matt:

Regarding the reply that the battery cannot enter the shutdown mode.

Please refer to the log data, you can see that the SDM logo has been turned on.

We have successfully sent back to back shutdown command twice within 4 seconds.

How about the wake up circuit? is it OK or I need to check something else?

    Please provide recommendations for us.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Is there a thermistor connected on the TS1 and TS2 pins? I see an older E2E post where a missing thermistor on the TS2 pin was preventing Shutdown.

    Matt

  • Hi Matt:

    Please refer our schematic.

We have TS1 and TS2 on our circuit.

And I don't get your mean, we need to enter shutdown mode.

Do you have idea how to do?

Please let us know your recommendations.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Statham,

Since this problem only occurs when connected to a load or scope, I think it would be good to measure the TS1 pin with an oscilloscope when the Shutdown command is sent to look for unexpected behavior or noise. If the TS1 pin is triggered, it will return to Normal mode. It would also be good to capture REGOUT at the same time.
