BQ34Z100-G1: unseal to full access lost key

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Good morning,

we have to analyze and update the BQ34Z100-G1 on an old battery pack returned from field. Unfortunately the unseal to full access key we had store in our repository does not work on such a pack.

How can we recover such a battery pack? It seems impossible to update the firmware (we are using the BQStudio and we are trying to upload the original golden file or the official firmware downloaded from TI website) without previously enabling the full access mode.

Is there any recovery procedure in the case the full access key has been lost (or simply it has been typed in a wrong way - it could happen because no double checks are required while changing such a key in the data memory)?

Thank you very much and best regards

Matteo

  • Hello Matteo,

There's no way to recover the pack without the key. You need the key in order to edit any data flash or update firmware. This is to prevent tampering with the gauges.

  • Hello Wyatt,

let me say this is a uncommon policy. Every (most of) kind of device has a recovery procedure, just in case the password has been lost or forgotten. Extreme cases use a complete mass erase of everything and the possibility to install the original flat standard version of software/firmware. There are many ways to guarantee the tampering prevention and simply to lock the system without the access key is the easiest way so solve the problem on your side but the most critical on manufacturer side.

I would like to point out once again the insertion of a new key (e.g. from BQStudio) does not require a double check, so it is not so strong to type a wrong character and so to definitely lock the system, without any possibility to recover it.

I would suggest to reconsider and extend your policy, in order to improve the product quality.

    Thak you and best regards

    Matteo

  • Hello Matteo,

We cannot disclose how to do a full reset of a gauge to customers because the possibility it will spread within the industry and our gauges will become easy to reset and tampered with, thus defeating the purpose of having authentication.

I would recommend you confirm your key is correct before going to production, once you confirm the key is as expected then you can program more gauges to prevent this kind of issue.

    Sincerely,
