TPS2596: replacing TPS25921, without thermal pad

Part Number: TPS2596

Can we recommend using the TPS2596 as a replacement to TPS25921 on the same board layout? Questions:

1. The TPS25921 layout does not have a thermal pad and therefore the TPS2596 will not have it connected. What is the current derating capacity in this case?

2. Is it okay to have the TPS2596 OVLO pin connected to ground to disable the overvoltage protection?

Thank you!

  • Hi Lenio,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

    1. The TPS25921 layout does not have a thermal pad and therefore the TPS2596 will not have it connected. What is the current derating capacity in this case? Avishek: Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (RθJA) of TPS25921 and TPS2596 without exposed pad soldered to PCB are almost same, 120.8 and 119.8 °C/W respectively. Hence, current derating may not be required.

    2. Is it okay to have the TPS2596 OVLO pin connected to ground to disable the overvoltage protection? Avishek: If the selected device is from TPS25963x variants, overvoltage lockout functionality will be disabled. If the selected device is form TPS25962x variants, overvoltage clamp threshold will be set at 3.8 V.
