R_IN, C_IN replacement with TVS for BQ24133

Dear Ti master,

Currently faced some problems in some with BQ24133 with C_IN (fig below)  cracked and short-circuited. This resulted in high current from the adaptor flowing into R_IN and C_IN which caused traces to heat up burnt. C_IN cracked due to mechanical stress.

I would like to check what's the recommended value for TVS to replace both R_IN & C_IN.

Vin: 12V

Icharge: 2A

Vbatt: 4.2V

  • N3T,

What are the power/voltage ratings on C_in and R_in? It sounds like they are not rated high enough. You could also increase your trace width to reduce temperature increase, and add thermal vias to transfer heat to ground planes.

However, if you still want to switch to a TVS diode, the SMAJ26CA from littelfuse could be a good place to start. It is rated for 26V, just below the 30V max for the AVCC pin.
