Hi,

I have an 8s2p LiFePO4 battery with a BQ34z100-g1. I ran the learning cycle and obtained the golden image, loaded this golden image in every BQ34z100-g1 and installed in the application.

However I have having a problem with SoC estimates because it appears to works fine until suddenly it falls to 0%. At first moment I though it was debt to power loss  but I have check it and this occurs althouh no power loss happened.

I have logged it and attach the file. The log starts with the battery full and a motor discharge it in no continuos periods. SoC_Error_GL.log

1. Why do SoC falls to 0%?

2. What can be happening?

If you need more data you only have to ask for it. I can log the real application esaily.

    -Did you correctly identify your chemid?
    -Did learning cycle complete successfully, with update status going to 06, and qmax and Resistance tables getting updated.
    -Did you program just the golden gg file on the unit you are testing or did you program a golden srec?
    -Can you run another cycle on that same pack without detaching the battery but the same load profile to see if that issue still shows up?
    -Also, always remember to attached a gg file extracted from the unit being tested.

    1. I think so. I attach the cell datasheet. I have chosen the chem ID = 450.8168.P4-LiFePO4 26650-3000-3.2V Cell Specification.pdf

    2. Yes, Iearning cycle was succesful, update status went to 06 and max error fell to 1%. 

    3. I am absolutely sure I programmed the golden .srec file.

    4. Ok, I am doing it. As soon as I try I will inform you. 

    5. I attach the gg file of the battery tested in case it were useful.

    If you have any comments about my answers (wrong chemID chosen, any error in gg file,..) please let me know. Meanwhile I am running another learning cycle to check if the error still shows up.

  • Hi Gorka,
    If after running this cycle, the issue persists, change your load select to 1 which is the default , issue a reset (0x41) while in relax mode, charge to full and discharge to empty so we see if that helps.

    I have donde some test and the problem still remains. I have chosen another battery (datasheet attachedP3-Datasheet Cell 3232 LFP 26650.pdf), chosen the ChemID (=450),done the learning cycles (where the update status went to 0x06 and maxError felt to 1%) and repeat the test.

    I also changed the load select to 1 as you said in your last post (yo can check it in the .gg file, also attached

    The test starts with a battery nearly full and a motor discharge it in no continuos periods. have logged it and attach the file.BQ34z100g1_Error_Cegasa170927.log

    As you can see suddenly the SOC falls from 43% to 0% due to a FCC updated (it changes from 6328 to 2599)

    1. What can be happening?

    2. Why do this changes in FCC happen? I supposed it is debt to Ra updates but I can not understand why this hich changes. 

    3. Watching the battery datasheet and the chosen ChemID, do you think is correct?

    4. Where do you think the problem is located?

    I hope this problem can be settled because at this moment I am rather concerned about it.

    Thanks for sharing the files. I reviewed your files and i have two experiments i want you to perform which will confirm my suspicions on what is wrong. I think your pulsed load is causing resistance to learn incorrectly.

    First experiment.
    -charge the battery to full and discharge to empty using a constant current load and see if you see the issue.

    Second experiment.
    -If the issue doesn't appear, set pack configuration be to A6 essentially disabling the FCONV flag. this is the flag that enables fast resistance scaling. Then run you pulsed load discharging from full to empty.

    I have donde both experiments with the following results:

    First experiment. Continuous discharge (FCONV=1; PConfigB = 0xa7

    The issue does not appear in a whole discharge of the battery. 

    Second experiment. Discontinuos discharge (FCONV=0; PConfigB = 0xa6) 

    The issue appear at 95% and suddenly the SoC drops to 0%. I attach the log and also the gg file

    So, the FCONV bit does not seem to be the cause of these SoC falls to 0%.

    In parallel with this I am doing learning cycles with others LiFePO4 batteries and I have seen something that I find remarkably in case it were linked with the problem. 

    1. I start with a relaxed 8s2p LiFePO4 battery at 22Vdc. Enable IT and let it 5 hours resting.

    2. Charge the battery to full (29Vdc) and when the charger is doing the constant voltage phase and the current is low (aprox. 70mA) the update status goes to 0x5 and maxError falls from 100% to 3%. That surprises me a lot. I thought that after charge ends then the battery relax and only after the relaxation has been completed (more than 5hours resting) and the battery is in a relaxed constant voltage the BQ update status goes to 0x5.

    3. I think that all the batteries in which I have run the learning cycle (include the ones I am having the problems above) have done the same. 

    Knowing these data I have the following questions:

    1. Do you think this issue can be the cause of my sudden SoC drops?  

    2. I have tried to run the learning cycle as it is said in the documents but I find the following problem. When the FC bit is just set (29V and 40 seconds  below 100mA) I removed the charger and let the battery relax until update status goes to 0x5. The problem is that this never occur. The voltage battery drops to 26500mV and maintains stable at this value but update status never goes to 0x5. I have waited for more than 48h and this never occurs. What can I do with this?

    Onyx, I need any other ideas about what might be causing the issue, I do not mind to do experiments but we have to solve it.

  • Hi Gorka,
    Thanks for doing the experiments. Can you attach the log that showed with the continuous current. The fact that the issue didn't show up with the constant current discharge has narrowed down the root cause just like i suspected. The pulsing current of your motor is causing is the culprit. I was thinking it was the fast resistance scaling function which was causing wrong resistance values to be learned. That has not been ruled out entirely although this log file sent has an explanation why the SOC dropped to 0. When you look at the log file you will see you had a large voltage spike that caused your voltage to dip below the terminate voltage. With 8 cells in series, when the 4500mA was applied, you can see that the voltage dropped to 21664- 2708 each cell which is below the terminate voltage of 2750. The gauge forces always forces SOC to 0 once terminate voltage is reached. Our newer gauges have a hold time which you can set. The cells voltage has to be below terminate voltage for that time period before the gauge will force SOC to 0. Unfortunately, that function doesn't happen to be on this gauge. You should implement some circuit with your motor that would prevent these voltage drops on the battery when the motor starts.

    -One more experiment to try would be to reduce your terminate voltage in data flash to about 2.4V. Also, keep that FConv flag cleared, i.e =0, and make sure to issue a reset command (0x41) so RAM gets updated with your changes. repeat your experiment with the pulsed load and let see if that helps.

    I will discuss your case with our lead algorithm expert to see if there are other alternative solutions to your unique case due to your heavy load spikes

    Thanks a lot for your time.
    The change of cell terminate voltage to 2.4V seems to work so now we have the path to follow. I have done a complete discontinuous discharge and never SoC dropped to 0%. These are very good news!!
    Another action could be to install a higher capacitor in BQ34z100 Bat pin in order to avoid these motor current spikes from reflecting on Bat pin. I am talking of capacities around 10uF which would give us 4-5 seconds of remaining voltage level and I think does not affect bq34z100 performance. What do you think about?
    Any other idea from your lead algorithm expert?

    Glad to know setting the terminate worked. Our lead algorithm expert suggested the same thing as well.

    The idea of using the 10uF on the bat pin of the bq34z100 also seems viable. I discussed this with the system engineer for the device and he agrees as well. So you can test a combination of both approaches and decide which path to follow.
