BQ40Z50 communication at 400 KHZ

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5338, BQ40Z50, BQ40Z50-R1

Hi all,

The datasheet for the BQ40Z50 has specifications for the SMBus XL at 400KHz in slave mode in the SLUSBS8 –DECEMBER 2013 document. But via the i2c communication of MSP430F5338 we can't able to communicate. Can anyone clarify  it is possible to communicate at 400 KHZ with the BQ40Z50 battery throgh i2c communication.

Also what is SMBus XL protocol? Is there any reference document for this?

Thanks in Advance

  • Prakash,
The SMBus XL mode can only be used to load the srec file into flash memory while in ROM mode. You will need to set the XL bit to enable SMBus XL and the protocol is the same as the normal SMBus mode.

  • Hello Thomas,

i don't see nowhere in datasheet any recommandation like your reply...

We use I2C at 400KHz and we communicate with our µC PIC16LFxxx for all datas.

Our only problem is that we lost communication, not systematically, but in this case BQ must be changed ! (?!!)

Because communication with the BQ SUDIO becomes IMPOSSIBLE, it does not recognized the target...

Precision: when the BQ studio is connected, the μC is being reset for not interacting with the EV2300, management in multi-master I2C mode isn't implemented in this tool...

Thomas if you have more informations about I2C and restrictions at 400KHz, please sent this elements, we looking for around our problem since few days now, maybe is a good reason.

We talk with Chase and you for BQ40Z50 since few months now, i'm a little surprise to read it now and here.

If I2C can work at 400KHz, and for programming so the worst case, why restriction for only read some datas?

Thank you to return to the subtleties of this, it is a very important topic for robustness and reliability.

    Best Regards.

    JY

  • Hi Tom,
Does this apply to the bq40z50-r1 as well?
    Thanks,
