Reverse polarity protection with TPS2492

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5060, TPS2492, LM5069

Hello,

The LM5060 datasheet has an example of adding reverse polarity protection to the hot-swap circuit with an additional N-channel Mosfet.

Is it possible to add similar reverse polarity protection to a hotswap circuit with the TPS2492?

best regards,

Tom

  • I have found the application note for the LM5069, which shows how to perform reverse polarity.

Since the TPS2492 has a very similar topology, i assume it can be applied in the same way.

  • Hi Tom,

    Welcome to the E2E Forums!

We strive for a quick response, but it appears we let this slip past us.

To answer your question, the devices are similar, so we believe it can work but we haven't tested it to see any potential problems.

For example, one thing to note is that the IMON function would be affected, as it will now have a diode drop offset since IC_GND is no longer chassis GND. Since the offset may not be exact (the diode drop may not be exact), the accuracy of reading IMON would change.

Another solution is to use a PFET on VIN. This is a little more expensive of a solution, but it is simpler and less prone to issues. Also, it would not have IMON accuracy affected.

This FET would turn on when VIN is positive and shut off when VIN is negative.

    Thanks!
