PTH12040W: De-rating Consideration for Application of the PTH12040W power module at 3.3V@60A

Part Number: PTH12040W
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTH08T250W

Hi,

I had a requirement of maximum output power/current of 3.3V@60A  and a typical requirement of 3.3V@50A. I am planned to use  PTH12040W  power module for the application.

Input Voltage shall be +12V +/-0.5V DC. Kindly comment  the module withstand ability over the power requirement of 3.3V@60A.

Suggest   thermal considerations need to be taken care  for the operation.

Shamsad P K

  • This device has been designed and characterized for operation up to 50A. It is not recommended to operate this device over 50A. Please consider paralleling 2 PTH08T250W device for currents above 50A.

  • I agree with your suggestion. But, I have space constraints for paralleling two modules hence no other go.

I would like to know the expecting failure mode for current over rated current of 50A.

As per my understanding the module have inbuilt over current, over temperature cut-off protection.

Kindly help me to understand this.

  • Yes, the device has over current and over temperature protection. However, the device is not designed to be operated up to these limits. These protections are in place to protect against a short circuit or extreme temperature condition. Operation above rated current and temperatures is not guaranteed or recommended.
