TPS4H160-Q1: TPS4h160 pull up resistor in channel off codition

Part Number: TPS4H160-Q1

Questions about the figure 30 of datasheet in TPS4H160 open load detection condition.

1) Can we describe more detail about the 20K pull up in channel off in TPS4H160?

2) follow above, how about there is no the pull up 20K or use 100K pull down in channel off condition?

  • Hello,

If the channel is off and a load is connected, it is a normal state and no fault is reported. If the channel is off and the load is open, it is not a normal state and a fault will be reported.

The pull up is important for reporting a fault in off state and open load. The pull up makes the output voltage close to supply voltage VS - VOUT < V(ol,off). With no pull up VS - VOUT can be higher the V(ol,off) due to leakage current and the fault will not be reported. TI suggest 20K pull up for making sure the fault is always reported.

The 100K pull down can not help in reporting the fault in off channel and open load situation. It makes the output voltage closer to ground and VS - VOUT > V(ol,off). That means with 100K pull down the fault will not be reported.

  • hello,

customer reported there is a leakage(from fault# 20K pull up to output) in TPS4H160 output.

Question:Can customer do not install pull up 20K if they let "fault#" pin 9 in floating?

  • The 20K pull up helps to report the open load condition in off state. The open load in off state is reported to FAULT (low) and CS (Vcs,h) pins. By removing the pull up, the fault may not be reported. Do you means reporting open load conditions in off state is not important?

    Regards

  • yes. does no 20K pull up require if customer no need reporting open load conditions in off state? my understand that there is no pull up require if no open load reporting require in off status.
    please help my statement again.
  • You are right. There is no need for pull up resistor if there is no requirement for reporting open load in off state.

    Regards
