TMS320C6674: Indoor 5g small base station selection

Part Number: TMS320C6674

We have a customer looking for a DSP to be used as a small indoor 5g base station. Is this model suitable? Is there a better recommendation?

  • Hi

The device belongs to the c667x family, that is broadly available and has been used in diverse applications. I am not aware of any one using this in 5g base stations although some of our other multicore devices have been used.

For those devices please see the following FAQ

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/processors-group/processors/f/processors-forum/809582/faq-tci6638k2k-support-guidance-tci6638k2k-tci6636k2h-tci6630k2l-66ak2l06

Having said that the software and documentation for c667x is available on product folder, it would be good for them to review the offering and the SDK content. if the base station application requires additional specific hardware accelerators , communication stacks or LTE libraries , we do not have any to offer.

You can also reach out to the recommended 3P in the FAQ above to see if one of the other listed devices will be a better fit.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

  • Hello!

Though whole DSP family is referred as C667x, they are not just scaled versions of each other. The latter applies to C6671, C6672, C6674, C6678 - these devices differ in number of processing cores available. You pointed at C6674 which is 4 core device, so if you aware of multicore programming, then why not pick up C6678 with double cores number at +10% price?

The outstanding member of the family is C6670, which, to my understanding, was specifically targeted to 4G LTE. Accelerators of this device were built to helpt with LTE signal processing - Bitrate Coprocessor, Turbo encoder and decoder, Viterbi decoder. To my knowledge, in 5G NR convolutional and Turbo code were replaced with polar codes and LDPC, thus advantages of C6670 vanish. It still has FFT coprocessor, which is super cool, and Antenna interface (AIF), but I am not aware about the latter use cases. And similarly to devices with TCI label this one has practically no support form TI.
