AM6421: AM642 - How to enable the Watchdog and use it on the uboot boot ?

Part Number: AM6421
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDA4VM

Hi All:

Q1. How to enable the AM64 Watchdog on the uboot boot if using internal watchdog??

Q2.How to enable the AM64 Watchdog on the uboot boot if using EXternal watchdog??

Q3. Any example in the uboot allow us to reference the code?

Thanks.

  • Hi Rio,

    - K3 kernel WDT needs ESM support to make it work
    - ESM support was added in SDK 8.2 u-boot.
    - Basic flow for WDT/ESM: WDT timeout event => Main ESM_ERRORz => MCU ESM_ERRORz => SoC RESET
    - I'm attaching the WDT/ESM test log with Linux SDK 8.2 on AM64x GP EVM in attachment for your reference.

    Best,

    -Hong

  • HI Hong:

    May you share how it be enabled on the SDK8.2?

    BTW, what we need is to make the wachdog works in the uboot phase.

    I'm not sure where is the uboot works log in your attachment.

    please provide more detail, thanks.

    BR Rio

  • Hello,

    I am using SDK 8.2 in TDA4VM Eval board. Looking forward to enable external watchdog in u-boot.

    Your suggestion to enable external watchdog in uboot will be helpful for me as well.

    Thanks in advance,

    Lakshmi Shetty

  • Hi Hong:

    Confirmed the uboot merged with while(1) won't kick the watchdog reset.

    You can see the offline mail I sent 2022/4/26.

    Thanks.

    BR Rio

  • This is proof-of-concept on RTI_WDT => ESM => SoC Reset @u-boot.
    - SDK 8.2 u-boot on AM64x GP EVM
    - ESM configuration in SPL in SDK 8.2
    - Basic flow: RTI_WDT countdown timeout => ESM ERRORz => SoC RESET
    - The full log with Linux SDK 8.2 on AM64x GP EVM is attached for your reference, where RTI_WDT timeout is configured for ~12seconds as an example.
    - CTRLMMR registers on RST_CTRL/RST_STAT/RST_SRC for main domain and mcu domain are also captured in the attached log file

    Best,

    -Hong
