TMS320DM8168: Rise in Casing Temperature of the Processor TMS320DM8168

Part Number: TMS320DM8168
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVP5150

Hello...!

Good day.

We are testing the TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 processor for recording purpose and it should work under the Ambient Conditions of 72°C.

Construction:

We have customized three Cards based on TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 in Digital Video Recorder (DVR). We are having two TVP5150 decoders connected to TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 on one Card for capturing 2 Composite Video and we are making use of 2 ADV7611 with each TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 in other two cards for capturing 4 DVI Videos.

Our DVR is making use of 28V to 5V DC DC converter and other regulators for providing required Power Supply to TMS320DM8168CCYGA2. We are making use of an SSD interface to SATA for recording.

Each card has 2 Temperature Sensors. One Temperature sensor is on the Casing/Lid of the Chip and another one is present on the Board. We have made use of Customized Passive Heat Sink for three cards enclosed inside DVR.

Concern:

We have kept a DVR for recording all Video Channels with a room temperature of 27°C. The Centre card stopped recording videos after 2 Hours and 21 Minutes. At that point, the case temperature of TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 is 56°C. While arriving at this temperature the frame rate had reduced drastically from 50FPS to 2 FPS. The application crashes after the case temperature rises to 60°C. We have observed the same behavior multiple times.

As per the technical datasheet, the Thermal resistance between the Junction to case is 0.21°C/W and the Junction temperature should reach up to 58.6°C. Whereas the operating junction temperature has max. temperature of 105°C...

We are not able to identify the cause of this crash. Whether it is thermal issue or any other issue that we are not able to identify. Please guide us to solve this problem.

Waiting for your kind response.

P.S.: Attached is the temperature graph over the period of 2 Hours and 21 Minutes for Case Temperature of TMS320DM8168CCYGA2.

  • Hi,

Sorry, both TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 and TVP5150 devices have no longer direct design support from TI. Is this happening on all Centre cards you have or just one? Can  you can repeat the same failure if you have another Centre card? Can you do ABA swap test - swap a good known TMS320DM8168CCYGA2 chip to your Centre card? Can you repeat the problem? Sorry for lack of guidance as we have limited knowledge on this device since it is no longer supported on e2e.
