TMS320C6424: Crystal Oscillator

Part Number: TMS320C6424

Hi Team,

Designing a new product based on the TMS320C6424, we would like to have a recommendation on an crystal (P/N) that will give the best performance for audio applications.

What shall be the frequency stability of the crystal how low is "low enough ppm"?

On the datasheet, P.158 "For audio applications, stability of the input clock is very important. The user should select crystals with low enough ppm to ensure good audio quality for the specific application."

I would like to have please an example including the load capacitors C1 and C2 and if possible also schematics of the EVAL board.

Thank you.

  • You need to answer this question yourself based on your specific system requirements. That is why the datasheet says, "The user should select crystals with low enough ppm to ensure good audio quality for the specific application."  The user in this case is the system designer.

The series combination of C1 and C2 should equal the crystal load capacitance. You should locate the crystal circuit very close to the device MXI/MXO pins and keep the signal traces as short as possible to avoid them from adding any significant parasitic capacitance to the crystal circuit. Place all components of the crystal circuit and signal traces over an adjacent layer continuous ground plane area this does not have any signals crossing directly under it to minimize the chance of noise coupling into the crystal circuit.
