PROCESSOR-SDK-AM64X: AM6412 SR2 cpsw0 can't send package, SDK 08.05.00.24

Part Number: PROCESSOR-SDK-AM64X
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM6412

Hi all,

my custom board used am6412 SR2, used CPSW0/1 like AM64x SK, the hardware and dtb same as AM64x SK, cpsw1 eth is normal, but cpsw0 eth can't send package, I check CPSW_RGMII0_TXC pin, it is only 2.5M, what is to check this CLK setting?

Thanks

  • Hello

    Thank you for the query.

Can you please check the hardware interface to ensure there is no error in the design or assembly.

If you have an SK, can you pls check the if the communication works.

Since i am not familiar with the design, i can only provide some guidelines.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • I have check hardware interface, eth0 and eth1 is same, but eth0 isn't work.

  • Hello

    Thank you for the inputs

I have check hardware interface, eth0 and eth1 is same, but eth0 isn't work.

I assume you checked the PHY, PHY related circuit and clock.

the complete path needs to be verified.

Are you using the same PHY that is on the EVM?

If you have an SK, can you pls check the if the communication works.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • I use RTL8211FSI phy for the eth0 and eth1, and I can get eth0 info, but I can't send package, because the CPSW_RGMII0_TXC pin CLK is wrong, but the eth1 all is normal.

  • hwo to check setting of CPSW_RGMII0_TXC pin CLK?

  • Hello

    Thank you for the query.

As a quick check please compare with the working CPSW port.

Are you seeing on a specific board or multiple boards?

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • the CPSW_RGMII0_TXC pin different, eth0 TXC is 2.5M, eth1 TXC is 25M, eth1 CLK is right, so I want to know how to check setting of TXC?

    thanks

  • Hello

    Thank you for the inputs.

Please read the PHY datasheet and the CPSWG section of the TRM.

The difference in clock speed indicates the 2 ports are working at different speeds.

I am not sure if all the hardware level checks are done. I would suggest reviewing the hardware including any straps or MDI connections.

I am not sure what is the configuration you are looking for.

If you share the schematics, i can have a quick look at the connections to the CPSWG.

You will have to verify the PHY connections or work with the PHY vendor.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Sreenivasa

Their schematics have been reviewed by you, they want to know the detail steps to set up CPSW TXC in software

  • Hello Ethan,

    Thank you for the inputs.

    Customer reported below issue:

     eth0 TXC is 2.5M, eth1 TXC is 25M,

It is indicating that the speed is different, and the reason could be a hardware issue - design or assembly.

I am  not sure if there is any specific config for the TXC.

Let me do a quick check of the schematics and reassign to the CPSW expert.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Dear Sreenivasa,

the ethtool check it is 100Mbps, the important thing is that network cann‘t work normally.

  • Hello

Please refer page 9 of the TO PHY datasheet.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dp83867ir.pdf

The below are the clock timing for 10M and 100M.

     For 10-Mbps and 100-Mbps, Tcyc will scale to 400 ns ± 40 ns and 40 ns ± 4 ns.

for 100M the clock timing is expected to be 40 ns ± 4 ns.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Dear Sceenivasa,

we used the RTL8211FSI-CG phy, please check the schematics

    .19A30340000-01_u.pdf

  • Hello

Thank you for the inputs and understand.

I would expect the RGMII clock timing to be the same for all the devices and shared the DP83867 to indicate the expected clock rate.

Can you help me understand if the clock measured is as above.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hi, Sreenivasa,

    eth0 TXC, can't work:

    eth1 TXC, normal work:

    eth0 status:

  • Hello

    Thank you for the inputs.

I am not a CPSW expert to review the log and provide comments. Looking at the clock frequency, with 2.5M clock the speed translates to 10 M and not 100 M.

Can you please check the status of ETH1?

I have assigned the thread to the CPSW expert.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hi,

Please attach the boot log and DTS that has the pertinent to the CPSW and PHYs.

As Sreenivasa is pointing out a 2.5M clock is reflective of 10M.

Also please attach the output of ifconfig -a

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Dear Schuyler,

      please see attach, thanks

  • Hi,

Thank you for the boot log. There are a few messages in the boot log that need investigating:

I expect to these messages since these PHY addresses are defined in the DTS.

    [ 1.403669] davinci_mdio 8000f00.mdio: phy[4]: device 8000f00.mdio:04, driver RTL8211F Gigabit Ethernet
    [ 1.413087] davinci_mdio 8000f00.mdio: phy[6]: device 8000f00.mdio:06, driver RTL8211F Gigabit Ethernet

These 2 PHYs I do not expect to since they are not defined in the DTS provided. How many PHYs are on the board and which interfaces are they connected to?

    [    7.135467] davinci_mdio 30032400.mdio: phy[2]: device 30032400.mdio:02, driver RTL8211F Gigabit Ethernet

    [    7.544872] davinci_mdio 300b2400.mdio: phy[0]: device 300b2400.mdio:00, driver RTL8211F Gigabit Ethernet

The other possible issue I am seeing is that the PHY definition are using TI PHY parameters which may or may not have an impact on the selected PHY, I recommend removing these fields in both CPSW PHYs, these TI PHY binding parameters.

    ti,rx-internal-delay = <DP83867_RGMIIDCTL_2_00_NS>;
    ti,fifo-depth = <DP83867_PHYCR_FIFO_DEPTH_4_B_NIB>

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi, Schuyler,

the other two phy used the PRG0_PRU0 and PRG1_PRU0 connected it, and I don't config it.

I remove the TI PHY binding parameters, but the issue same as before, eth1 is normal, eth0 can't work.

  • Hi,

Since eth1 is working correctly I would recommend reviewing this setup with the PHY manufacturer. ethtool is showing 100Mbps. Please see if the PHY manufacturer can explain why the TXC rate is 2.5MHz.

The PHYs are still getting identified which means there is a config somewhere. Which SDK are you using? Is Linux intended to control the PRU?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi, Schuyler,

Isn't the TXC rate output by the am6412? I remove connecte of the TXC and phy, I test rhe TXC output, it is 2.5MHz

        the SDK is 08.05.0024

I have remove the other PHY(PRG0_PRU0 and PRG1_PRU0) config, the issue same as before, eth1 is normal, eth0 can't work.

  • Hi, Schuyler,

how to set up/check CPSW TXC config in software?

  • Hi,

This register should indicate the speed, the TRM location for the register description

    12.2.1.6.1.9 CPSW_SS_RGMII1_STATUS_REG Register (Offset = 30h)

    CPSW0_NUSS_SS 0800 0030h, this can be read using devmem2,

    devmem2 0x8000030

Please note that the same flow that is making eth1 work correctly should allow eth0 to work as expected. The PHY communicates through the MDIO driver the link speed, duplex mode etc to the CPSW driver. This information is specified by the PHY and the CPSW only sets up the interface based on what the PHY tells it.

The question here is why ethtool is reporting 100Mbps but you are measuring 2.5MHz or 10Mbps on the TXC. This suggests that MDIO transactions are reading the wrong PHY. The ethool output should be not be reading 100Mbps. So to isolate further disconnect the cable to eth1 if there was a cable attached and read ethtool eth0 again. Another suggestion would be removing eth1 from the configuration and reading ethtool eth0.

Please attach the full boot log with the single interface defined in the DTS, I want to see all the way to the login prompt. I am looking to see how the interface establishes a link partner. Also please attach the ethtool eth0 and devmem2 results.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi, Schuyler,

I remove mdio pin from eth1, the only eth0 log has upload.

I replace image and dtb of AM64X SK SR1 to my image and dtb, the eth0 and eth1 is normal.

  • Hi, Schuyler,

        Any update?

  • Hi,

Since eth0 now works without eth1 connected indicates a HW issue related to the PHYs. Is the TX clock as expected on eth0? When you say normal, eth0 is able to send/receive packets?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi, Schuyler,

eth0 can't work without eth1 connected on my ccustom board.

how to set up/check CPSW TXC config in software?

  • Hi Schuyler

    Any update?

  • Have you tried plugging in a 1G device instead of 100M ? Does that work? All the ethtool and ifconfig printouts look like a 100M / 10M capable Ethernet PHY/MAC is on the other side.

      Pekka

  • Yes, I have plugging in a 1G device to test, but it can't work.

  • Hi,

Thank you for trying that test.

The clock shows 2.5MHz but ethtool is reporting 100Mbps. Typically this indicates a PHY addressing issue. Lets look at the link from a Linux PC connected directly and see what the link partner is detecting when connected to the board.

    Please do the following:

    - Please only connect eth0 of the board (no other ethernet port) to a Linux PC (no switch in-between) as we need to follow the DHCP requests that will be sent by the eth0 interface from your board. From the Linux PC perspective once connected please post the results of the following: ifconfig (interface), ethtool (interface) and ethtool -S (interface) from the Linux PC. We are looking for CRC errors, matching link speeds and link advertisements. The ethtool -S returns the mac level statistics. So if RX CRC errors are detected by the PC this indicates the packets are corrupted.

    - Please post the results of your board like the PC, ifconfig eth0, ethtool eth0 and ethtool -S eth0. We want to see matching number of packets. The ifconfig from the previous shows a non-zero tx packet count which indicates the network stack had an active link partner. The ethtool -S shows the MAC level statistics and will tell us if the TX packets for the DHCP request actually went on the line.

ethtool shows auto-negotiation is enabled. 2.5 MHz usually is indicates a failed auto-negotiation process.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • This is a parallel request to what Schuyler is asking.

Yes, I have plugging in a 1G device to test, but it can't work.

So the problematic eth1, where you see TXC at 2.5MHz when ethtool shows 100M, when you plug it in to 1G link partner, do you also still see 2.5MHz TXC?

Also what does ethtool show at the device you have connected to eth1? Does it show the AM6412 eth1 advertised modes

    Link partner advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full

    or something else?

  • Hi,

Thank you for the data. Based on the data you provided indicates there is a PHY that established a link and the link partner is matching the expected link speed. As a link comes up the kernel will send DHCP requests for an IP address. Knowing the DHCP process that can be used here to follow the packets to test if these packets are being received by the link partner.

In this test case the link partner did not receive any packets according to the link partner MAC statistics reported by ethtool. But the custom board did send packets according to the MAC statistics reported by ethtool on the custom board. So for the moment this looks like perhaps a PHY addressing issue. One of the PHYs is answering to what is expected to be connected to eth0. The scope captures a 2.5 MHz clock which is not consistent with 100Mbps or the 1Gbps that ethtool is reporting here.

So in this use scenario with only eth0 connected with a ethernet cable please measure each PHYs TXC to see which PHY thinks it has a link partner.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Yes, it still 2.5MHz TX

when connected to eth0, it show:

    root@am64xx-evm:~# [ 110.548344] am65-cpsw-nuss 8000000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full - flow control rx/tx

  • Dear Schuyler,

when eht eth0 connected with a ethernet cable only, TXC of the eth0 is 2.5MHz, RXC of the eth0 is 25MHz, TXC of the eth1 is 25MHz, RXC of eth eth1 is 2.5MHz, ethtool eth0 is 100M, ethtool eth1 is Unknow.

when I remove all ethernet cable for the eth0 anf eth1, TXC of the eth0 is 2.5MHz, RXC of the eth0 is 2.5MHz, TXC of the eth1 is 25MHz, RXC of eth eth1 is 2.5MHz, ethtool eth0 is Unknow, ethtool eth1 is Unknow.

  • Hi,

Thank you for the data on both txc and rxc clocks. We were expecting eth1 with the cable disconnected to be 2.5 MHz for both clocks since this is the expectation for an auto-negotiated links after no link detected.

Also please measure the TX and RX clocks of both eth0 and eth1 with no ethernet cables connected to the board right after a power up.

Then please perform the original test case of the cable only connected to eth0 what is reported by these devmem2 commands?

    devmem2 0x8000030

    devmem2 0x8000040

Then, please perform another power again with no cables connected to the board. Then could you please connect only eth1 and measure the clocks for eth0 and eth1? Also please perform the same devmem commands from above. Please provide the output from the console for this second test.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi,

Thank you for the data. First my mistake I asked for the wrong register to be read, the 8000030(eth0)  register is correct. I wanted to read 0x8000034 (eth1) instead of 0x8000040, this is my mistake.

It is still not clear what is happening looking at the 100M cable test.

Lets concentrate on this 100Mbps test case a little bit more:

    - Please test with the cable plugged into only eth0 with a 100Mbps device and no cable plugged into eth1 after a boot. Please measure the PHY clocks for eth0 and eth1.

Previously, ethtool eth0 in this test case is showing 100Mbps and link detected. The register 0x08000030 is indicating what you are measuring which is 10Mbps and no link.

Please use this command to get the phy status register from the PHY, this is a standard MII register:

     phytool print eth0/e/0x11

The register 0x08000030, ethtool link status and speed and the PHY should all match in showing the speed, duplex mode. I expect that you will still read 0 for 0x8000030, 100Mbps link detected for the ethtool eth0 output and the phytool as well.

This issue still looks to be a some kind of PHY addressing issue. I would like to verfiy that the compiled DTB is what is expected. I would like to suggest to reverse compile or dissemble the board DTB file. Have you done that before?

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi Schyler,

    eth0 tx 2.5M rx 25M // 100M

    eth1 tx 25M rx 2.5M // no cable

I don't dissemble the board DTB file before. I used same Image and dtb boot on the SK board, it is normal work.

  • Hi,

I again asked for the wrong register in the phytool output. I would like to see this phytool print eth0/4/0x11. I didn't catch my error until now.

If you attach the DTB file I will reverse compile it and attach it back here. When you run the DTB on the SK are you compiling with the PHY addresses of the SK EVM?

The data that you have collected shows the TX clock on eth1 is getting enabled when the cable is plugged into eth0. The various debug steps tried so far do not explain why the eth1 TX clock is getting configured when no link partner is attached.

This may have been asked earlier but is there a way to physically disable the PHY for eth1? Remove power for example? The reason to do this is this remove any possibility that the PHY on eth1 is interacting on behalf of eth0.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Hi Schuyler,

I don't modify PHY address, the driver scan the PHY address and found it.

I apologize as I may not be following. The PHY addresses are different between your board and the TI board. When using your DTB on the TI EVM are the ports able to function?

By removing eth1 from the scan by either removing power or holding it in reset I would like to see what ethtool eth0 displays. So far it looks like it is reading the link status of the phy attached to eth1.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler

  • Dear Schuyler,

Yes, it is normal when used my dtb.

when I remove eth1 chip, I can get eth0 link status, so I think than it is read eth0 link status.
