DRA821U-Q1: Rebooting error in room temperature environment(25 degrees Celsius)

Hello,

My customer tested the reboot behavior of the DRA821U-Q1 in room temperature environment(25 degrees Celsius) with a board they designed.

When the device was repeatedly rebooted using the reboot command, a symptom of stopping while loading the kernel occurred.

Please review the log file below.

    In the U-Boot prompt please try the below commands:

    setenv dorprocboot 1
    saveenv

    Basically the R5F core 1 is being loaded before core0 which is causing a hang.

    If you are using 9.x SDK then you will need to add that as part of uenv.txt in the boot partition.

    The customer repeatedly rebooted the DRA821U-Q1 using the commands you provided, but the symptom was the same.

    Referring to the log file above, when reboot is executed, a freeze occurs at the line below.

    They say that the boot flow is the same as EVM as there is no special modification.

    Additionally, the H/W boots with eMMC without using any other storage devices.

    Can you please check if the environment variable dorprocboot is actually set to 1 in U-boot prompt?

    Use the command:

    printenv dorprocboot

    Also which SDK version is being used?

    After checking the provided commands, it appears as follows:

    => printenv dorprocboot

    dorprocboot=1

    The SDK currently in use is 8.04.

    I also tested it with SDK version 9.01, but it still hangs at the same point.

    I do not think U-Boot is booting the remoteprocs if you continue to see above traces.

    The current Linux driver does not ensure the boot ordering, but U-Boot allows the proper core loading order between Core0 and Core1.

    The kernel traces should not show the processors to be in 'remoteproc' mode, they should show up as 'IPC-only' mode. If you do not see the latter, then U-Boot has not booted the processors.

    Yes, the usage of EthFW is failrly standard. EthFW is on MCU2_0 and needs to be booted at U-Boot prompt.

    Why don't we need a solution to why we stop using remoteproc?

    I am not sure what you are saying here. We always need a loader code to load firmware and boot a remote-processor. So, you always need a remoteproc driver for this either at U-Boot or in Linux.

    I only see MCU1_0 booted in IPC-only mode (as expected, since this is the DM firmware that R5 SPL branches off to). All the MAIN R5Fs are in remoteproc mode only, meaning they have not been booted at U-Boot.

    You haven't provided the complete log, so I cannot see the relevant traces from U-Boot that shows that these processors are indeed booted at U-Boot. Please provide the complete log.

    The MAIN R5FSS Core0 and Core1 failed to boot from U-Boot as per the below lines from your log. Also, you are attempting to boot MCU1_0, which should not even be attempted. U-Boot fails these gracefully, so you are able to proceed further.

    This is a helper variable to control the boot of the relevant cores. This does not automatically boot the MAIN R5F cores. This depends on the variables set in the rproc_fw_binaries variable.

    The overall sequence is part of the bootcmd. 

    Please inspect all the various commands part of your bootcmd, and how they play around the above variables. IIRC, the commands are effective only for MMC interface in the TI SDK, and not if you are using other peripheral boots.

    Your latest log clearly shows the processors booted in U-Boot, and the kernel detecting these properly and configuring the R5Fs to be in IPC-only mode.

    Your earlier reboot logs though did not showcase this.

    However, when loading the firmware from U-BOOT, ethfw does not operate properly in the kernel.

    Let's concentrate on the original topic of this thread - reboot frozen. Please do not fork this thread into a completely different topic.

    OK. I will inquire separately about the issue with ethfw not functioning properly.

    I have confirmed that loading the F/W in U-BOOT does not cause the system to hang during repeated tests.
