TPS5410-Q1: Impact of inductor DCR in control loop with ceramic capacitors

Part Number: TPS5410-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMR66410-Q1

Hi,

In the app note  SLVA237C , the compensation loop is modified in case ceramic capacitors (very low ESR) are used.
My question is: In case the inductor already provides high ESR (chip indcutor, 0.5 Ohms ) higher than the calculated minimum ESR for capacitor. Then, can de feedback designed as Aluminum capacitor and remove the extra feedback elements?
Thanks.

  • Hello,

I would not suggest that since the inductor DCR will result in poor efficiency due to I^2R losses.

As such I would suggest following design#3 (Design Procedure for Ceramic Output Capacitors) to ensure a stable design that is relatively high in efficiency.

However in general I would recommend you use a newer device which has high efficiency and better ease of design like the LMR66410-Q1.

    Regards,

    Jimmy
