Customer question on OMAPL138BGWTMEP

We use the P/N OMAPL138BGWTMEP DSP+ARM Processor FPGA in a few of our applications. I have a question regarding the section seen below.

We are using a 25MHz crystal for our application. I am wondering how crucial is the 60 ohm max ESR? Would their be major issues if the crystal had a 70 max ESR?

The word recommendation stick out to me. That is why I am wondering how crucial it is or isn’t to meet that 60 ESR value?

Thank You!

  • A crystal with an ESR greater than 60 Ohms may reduce the loop gain of the oscillator enough that oscillation never begins.

It should not be difficult to find a crystal with an ESR less than 60 Ohms.

Note: You may find it is easier to find a ESR less than 60 Ohms if you select a large crystal package. I have noticed crystals sold in smaller packages typically have higher ESR.
