AM625: AM6254 issue with the Power up sequence using TPS6521903RHBR

Part Number: AM625
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV62595, TPS65219

Play Schematic.pdf

Tool/software:

Hello,

I have Designed my own board using AM6254ATCGGAALW with TPS6521903RHBR IC. I am getting the back feeding voltage as 0.53V at VDD_1V8 and then it increases after few seconds to 0.83V. Then it remains at same state. I will be sharing you the schematic of the board. The schematic is taken reference from Beagleplay Board (https://git.beagleboard.org/beagleplay).

Thanks

Mohit Sharma

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you for the schematics.

You need to provide a searchable PDF for me to do a quick review.

Can you verify if there are any pulls that are powered by any other supply that is available before the SOC PMIC supplies ramp.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Play.pdf

    Hello Kallikuppa,

    Please find the attached PDF.

Only 5V I am giving via USB to the board and it is directly going to the PMIC and then it is enabling the 3.3V Buck Convertor U2.

    Regards
    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

Is there a block diagram that you could share.

if i understand correctly, you are saying there are no external inputs connected - is that correct?

    Sreenivasa

  • BeaglePlay_sch.pdf

    Hi Sreenivasa

This PDF contains the block diagram as well the overall schematic for the beagleplay.

I just wanted to confirm, I have one more board in which the PMIC power ON and tries 3 times and then turns off, is there any dependency from the AM625 processor, because the Resetstatz is directly connected to it.

    Below waveforms represents

    Green represents GPO2

    yellow represents output of TLV62595.

The output of buck 2 (VDD_1V8) also tries for 3 times and then turns off.

    Thanks

    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

This PDF contains the block diagram as well the overall schematic for the beagleplay.

Help me understand the reason you attached the beagle play schematics?

I just wanted to confirm, I have one more board in which the PMIC power ON and tries 3 times and then turns off

Which board  are you referring here?

    7.3.1 Power-Up Sequencing

The TPS65219 allows flexible sequencing of the rails. The order of the rails, including GPO1, GPO2, GPIO for the external rails, and the nRSTOUT pin is defined by the NVM. Prior to starting the power-up sequence, the device checks if the voltage on all rails fell below the SCG-threshold to avoid starting into a pre-biased rail. The sequence is timing based. In addition, the previous rail must have passed the UV-threshold, else the subsequent rail is not enabled. If UV is masked, the sequence proceeds even if the UV-threshold is not reached. GPO1, GPO2, GPIO, and LDOs configured in bypass- or LSW-mode are not monitored for under-voltage, thus their outputs do not gate subsequent rails.

In case the sequence is interrupted due to an unmasked fault on a rail, the device powers down. The TPS65219 attempts to power up two more times. If both of those re-tries fail to enter ACTIVE state, the device remains in INITIALIZE state until VSYS is power-cycled. While it is encouraged to keep this retry-counter active, one can disable it by setting bit MASK_RETRY_COUNT in INT_MASK_UV register.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps65219.pdf

You can verify the voltage to see the voltage rail causing the retry.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

Looks like you changed the MMC0 IO supply and pulls to 3.3V.

When these are at 3.3V the VDDSHV4 is required to be connected to 3.3V.

The beagle play MMC0 eMMC flash IO is connected to 1.8V and VDDSHV4 also connects to 1.8V.

Looks like you did not change the VDDSHV4 supply to 3.3V.

I suspect this could be causing the voltage feed to 1.8V.

Please make the required updates and review for any similar changes that you may have done.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Sreenivasa

I had tested the same EMMC(Part number is different as in beagleplay) with the 3.3V instead of 1.8V it works fine( tested with a stm32 microcontroller). Please let me know if VDDSHV4 is important.

Also as the board is new so the there is no OS in the EMMC will be booting from using pressing the USR button before powering up and then releasing the button. so it boots from SD card.

    Thanks

    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

I had tested the same EMMC(Part number is different as in beagleplay) with the 3.3V instead of 1.8V it works fine( tested with a stm32 microcontroller).

Not sure i understand what you mean here. The issue is not with the eMMC part but the IO levels.

Please let me know if VDDSHV4 is important.

The IO supply of the memory and the SOC IO supply level is expected (must) to match.  Do you know why the VDDSHV4 was not changed - was it a miss?

The problem is the 3.3V ramps before 1.8V and the 3.3V is fed into the MMC0 referenced to VDDSHV4.

SOC IOs are not fail-safe and no input should be applied before the supply ramps.

The only solution is removing the eMMC memory and all associated pulls for eMMC that connects to 3.3V.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

In case you made any other changes, please review those changes to ensure the IO levels between the SOC and the attached device matches.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Sreenivasa

Question  : board  are you referring here?

The board is copy of the same board

    thanks

    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

Question  : board  are you referring here?

The board is copy of the same board

I am not sure i understand your inputs.

Please note that the SOC IO supply level and the attached device (eMMC) IO supply level is expected to be the same. No exception.

You need to fix the eMMC IO supply or remove the eMMC related components.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Sreenivasa,

I tested the PMIC with no loads attached but it was showing me the same issues, It tries 3 times to power on the PMIC but after that it shuts down.

Only the GPO2 and VDD_1V8 tries for the three times and the remaining power supplies have no outputs

    thanks

    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

GPO2 controls the 3.3V supply 3.3V is from the DC/DC. The Next supply is 1.8V and that may not come up.

Disable the 3.3V and check the PMIC operation.

You need to ensure all the supplies to the SOC is disconnected since the 3.3V need to be available before other supplies.

I already provided my assessment and may not be able to further support until the IO supplies for all the attached devices and SOC are same.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Shreenivasa,

I just tested my own board by supplying the PMIC power from the market purchased Beagleplay.

In this I removed the PMIC and inductors form my board and soldering the PMIC outputs of beagleplay to my own board. When connecting the beagleplay 1.8V to my own board it tries 3 times and shuts down. This test is done after removing the EMMC from the board.  except the VDD_1.8V all the remaining voltages I can see in my board while connecting through wires form 1 board to another.

    Thanks,
    Mohit

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

except the VDD_1.8V all the remaining voltages I can see in my board while connecting through wires form 1 board to another.

Can you list out all the components that you removed on the custom board?

I assume you realize the Beagleplay board works and the custom board does not work.

Since you understand the changes, it would be efficient for you to review and make the required updates.

I already provided my inputs on the eMMC IO level mismatch.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa

  • Hello Shreenivasa,

Thanku for your reply I made the processor to boot, after removing the emmc and remaining peripherals.

But stuck up with on booting, attaching the error which i am facing on debug console.

Gave up waiting for suspend/resume device
Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
    - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
    - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
    - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/mmcblk1p3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
(initramfs) Gave up waiting for suspend/resume device
Gave upsh: 1: Gave: not found

Is the processor is searching for the emmc to boot please let me know.

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

Thank you and good to see you made progress.

Can you conform the bootmode you have configured. I assume you have not configured for eMMC boot.

You need to start a new E2E thread regarding the boot issues.

  • Hello Mohit Sharma

    Thank you.

The I2C0 lines from PMIC was not connected with the EEPROM,RTC and processor.

Not sure if i understand the inputs.

Anyways good to hear the board works assuming this is with the eMMC related circuit removed.

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa
