TDA4VM: Hardware connection error with scalable PMICs GUI

Part Number: TDA4VM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS6594EVM

Tool/software:

Hello,

I tried to connect a customized TDA4VM board to the scalable PMICs GUI. The PMIC on the board is TPS6594x.

I see four USB Serial Port (COM93~COM96), XDS110 Class Application/User UART (COM8), and XDS110 Class Auxiliary Data Port (COM9) from the device manager.

I tried the connection in Windows 10. However, it had the connection error as below image. I was not able to choose any serial port from the GUI. Please help.

Thanks.

  • Hi Jeff,

When you click the dropdown for serial port in the GUI what do you see - is nothing listed?

    Regards,

    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

Yes. I don't see any port when I clicked the dropdown.

    Best Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

You mentioned you are using a customized TDA4VM board - does this mean you are using your own board design, or you modified an existing EVM? Can you share which EVM?

From the troubleshooting section 12.1 of the Scalable PMIC GUI User's Guide www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slvubt8 you should see the COM ports listed as ACCtrl and ACCtrl Console, as well as one DFU class in the device manager on the PC. Do you see these/can you share a screenshot?.

    Regards,

    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

Are you asking me to check ACCtrl and ACCtrl Console from the device manager? I could try to investigate it by clicking each port with mouse right button. The board is not listed on website in public. It was designed for internal use.

    Best Regards,

    Jeff

  • Backing up then - do you have access to PMIC EVM that you can use to confirm this works with GUI first?

For custom board, how are you connecting the PMIC to the USB to the PC? Are you using TI PMIC EVM TPS6594EVM to connect to a PMIC on your own board, or some other method? I'm trying to understand the hardware tools being used in your case to make the connection.

    Regards,

    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

Currently, I don't have a PMIC EVM. I'm just connecting the board to PC with USB connection only. Do I have to buy the TPS6594EVM to connect my board to the GUI?

    Best Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

On our EVMs normally there is a microcontroller between the USB connected to the PC, and then it connects via I2C to the PMIC device. And that microcontroller has a firmware on it doing that conversion/translation. In the Scalable PMIC User's Guide www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slvubt8 Introduction it describes this, it refers to this as the AEVM:

Since you are working from a custom board, I don't know what you have between the USB and then to connect to the PMIC - you could draw this out maybe, but essentially you need something to be doing this connection/translation. But often folks use the PMIC EVM for doing their configuration/development e.g. TPS6594EVM because it has this AEVM built-in.

    Regards,

    Katie
