Dear Team,

I am working on CAN with J1939 support. I was referring to the following link for CAN support

4.1.3. How to enable MCAN in Linux — Processor SDK AM62Px Documentation

As per the document, the official part CAN Transceiver board recommended by TI is SN65HVD230.

Could you please confirm if SN65HVD230 supports J1939? The technical documentation mentions about 11898-2 support, however doesn't mention about SAE J1939 explicitly.

On research, I can clearly see that SN65HVD233-HT 3.3-V CAN Transceiver supports SAE J1939.

Could you please clarify if SN65HVD230 can support J1939?

If so, what are the kernel drivers that I need to enable apart from can-j1939.ko?

SAE J1939 does not have to do with the transceiver itself, such as SN65HVD230. This is a higher-level protocol specification related to the processor/controller and how it communicates using CAN's ISO 11898-2 physical layer. Also, if you're intending to use 3.3V CAN transceivers, please consider the newest family of industrial 3.3V CAN: TCAN3413 and TCAN3414.

Dear Danny,

I truly understand that J1939 is an upper layer protocol. However, I also understand that there are specific timing requirements that are required for extended CAN with J1939. So the question.

Secondly, If I understand correctly, TI uses MCAN from Bosch and not the standard CAN drivers. Standard can is made as part of GKI.

However, for MCAN I couldn't find a way to attach can_j1939 driver so that I can use the in-built j1939 stack.

We would like to know of any solution that TI might want to propose for integrating J1939 that could work on top of MCAN drivers.

Hi,

As Danny mentioned J1939 protocol is a higher layer protocol. I do not know of any experts at the moment within TI regarding this protocol. Could you describe more of the in-built stack you are referring to?

The CAN interface whether it is MCAN or DCAN (legacy) is part of the network stack in Linux. Therefore the interface is accessible through the network socket API. Is that what you needed to know?
