J721EXSOMXEVM: It didn't boot-up and HDMI has problem.

Part Number: J721EXSOMXEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SK-TDA4VM

Dear,

I recently purchased six sk-tda4vm evm boards under following order number.

  • T06033932
  • T05994317

Unfortunately, three of them appear to be defective.

  • Two fail to boot-up from SD card and I flashed "tisdk-edgeai-image-j721e-evm.wic.xz" image downloaded from www.ti.com/.../09.01.00.06 link.
  • One board has hdmi output issue. The screen has lot of visual noise and HDMI monitor often indicates no input or no signal.

Could you please advise me on the proper procedure for returning these three defective boards for replacement or refund?

Additionally, I plan to purchase two more of these EVM boards. However, I am concerned about the high defect rate I've experienced so far.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

I look forward to your prompt response.

  • All boards are functionally tested prior to shipment, so it is very rare for users to have issues. Can you please confirm you have the correct dip switch settings for booting from SD card?  Maybe compare a working setup to get these dip switch settings or you can refer to the EVM User's guide (Link).  Even if settings look correct, we advise to toggle each switch to make sure setting is correct.  Sometimes the switch can be pushed without toggling the internal switch mechanism.

What power supply are you using?  Does it support power delivery (PD)?

On the board with HDMI issue - can you try a different HDMI cable?

  • Hi Robert,

I checked the SW1 switch on/off state based on schematic and also measured the pins even at CPLD side.

    All pins were low.

Two evm boards still have a boot problem.

What further trobleshooting steps can I do?

HDMI problem was solved from changing cable and monitor.

  • Can you confirm the power supply your are using?  Required is a 65W to 100W supply (supports Power Delivery).  If supply does not support PD, then it likely is only a 15W supply.

For the failing boards, does the power LED light up when power applied?

  • Hi~

The USBPD(100W) was used for testing.

We purchased six boards and two of them had boot-up problems.
    I tested in indentical environments.

  • Thanks for confirming the power supply.  Again - this is rare as all system are tested prior to shipment.  On a few systems, I've seen the SD card connector pins get bent so they don't make good contact with the card. You can take a small screw driver or other object and press each of the pins inward (with no card inserted).   This might help re-align a pin if it was bent.

If that does not work - you can request a replacement at the following link:  Link.  Scroll down the webpage and click 'Submit a support ticket'.  Explain that you have a new EVM that is failing and need a replacement.  Use this E2E thread as proof that TI has agreed the original EVM is faulty.

  • Hi Robert,

As you mentioned, after pressing all the SD card pins, the boards are now working well.

    Thansks!!
