AM1802 McASP Port

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM1802, AM1808, AM1806

I believe it can but I wanted to confirm that the AM1802 can have a I2S port (to connect to an external DAC) as well as a DIT (to connect to an external S/PDIF transmitter) and both can be active at the same time.

  • Hi, the AM1802 only has one McASP, and therefore only has one Rx I2S port and one Tx I2S port.  The Tx port is DIT capable (meaning it does the biphase mark encoding required for S/PDIF), but unfortunately if you set Tx to DIT mode, all Tx serializers will be in DIT mode; you won't be able to connect that Tx port to an external DAC that's expecting I2S.  If you're looking for I2S and S/PDIF output at the same time, you could possibly send the same data going to the DAC to an external DIT chip (assuming that it's stereo content).

I believe that there are other AM180x devices that also include a McBSP.  McBSP doesn't support DIT mode, but if you just have one pin of I2S data to send to the DAC, you could use McBSP for that and McASP for DIT output.

  • OK that sucks for me! The next up in the series, AM1806 has 2 McBSP and 1 McASP so that would work if I move I2S to one of the McBSP ports and use the McASP for DIT BUT the AM1806 drops EMAC so I loose the nice Ethernet connection so I need to go to the AM1808 which bumps the ASP from $5.30 to $6.95.
