What is the difference between TMS320VC5501 and TMS320VC5502

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320VC5502, TMS320VC5501

Hi,

Apart from the difference of Max Freq, HPI, McBSP, RAM, what is the functional difference between TMS320VC5501 and TMS320VC5502?

Can I replace TMS320VC5502 with TMS320VC5501, if my application requires only 8-bit HPI, 2 McBSP and 32K RAM? VC5501 is half the price of VC5502.

Please let me know.

Thank you.

Regards,

Archana.

  • Hello Archana,

With respect to your application : "only 8-bit HPI, 2 McBSP and 32K RAM" - Yes, you can use C5501 device.

Also for further details on C5502 & C5501  you can refer specific datasheets.

         C5501 Datasheet  & C5502 Datasheet

Hope the above information helps .

  • I believe so by comparing the required functions as you stated, packages and pinouts. I would believe you should have own testing procedures to confirm your requirements.

    Regards.

  • Also, below table illustrates the Major difference between the C5501 and C5502 :

                C5501            C5502

− 3.33-ns Instruction Cycle Time for
    300-MHz Clock Rate
    3.33-/5-ns Instruction Cycle Time
    – 300-/200-MHz Clock Rate

    16K x 16-Bit On-Chip RAM That is
Composed of Four Blocks of 4K × 16-Bit
    Dual-Access RAM (DARAM) (32K Bytes)
    32K X 16-Bit On-Chip RAM That is Composed
    of Eight Blocks of 4K X 16-Bit Dual-Access
    RAM (DARAM) (64K Bytes)

− Two Multichannel Buffered Serial Ports
    (McBSPs)
Three Multichannel Buffered Serial Ports (McBSPs)

8-Bit Parallel Host-Port Interface (HPI) 8-Bit/16-Bit Parallel Host-Port Interface (HPI)

     Hope this will be useful.

  • Hello Steve, Vasantha,

    Thank you for the replies.

I have one more doubt about the firmwares. How does the roll back from VC5502 to VC5501 affect firmware?

    Thanks,

    Archana.

  • Hello Archana,

With respect to firmware changes, if any of the C5502 feature is used (Refer to the C5502 table), then yes this would involve firmware changes too.

    Regards

     Vasanth

  • ok. That means as per the 5502 table, if I am using McBSP or 16-bit HPI..correct?

Else, the same firmware would work for both VC5502 and 5501, if only 2 McBSPs are used and 8-bit HPI is required.

(considering external hardware pull ups/down requirements)

    Thanks,

    Archana.
