AM1808: Migration from AM1707 to AM1808

Guru 24520 points
Part Number: AM1808
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM1707,

Hi TI Experts,

Now my customer use the AM1707 for their system. But the SDRAM for AM1707 is not reduce the footprint area and cost down.So they are thinking to use the AM1808 in order to reduce the system cost.
So, please let me confirm the following questions.
[Question.1]
Can customer develop the AM1808 with the same environment as AM1707?
[Question.2]
Can customer use the same code of AM1707 for AM1808?
[Question.3]
Is there any difference of performance between AM1707 and AM1808?

If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best regards.
Kaka

  • I've forwarded your query to the AM1xxx experts. Their feedback should be posted here.

  • Both the devices are similar interms of ARM DSP and memory architecture but there are some key differences in PLL/clocking and peripheral set that your customer needs to consider. The best way to do this is do a side by side comparison using the tool provided here: (enter the features required)

    http://www.ti.com/processors/sitara/arm9/am1x/products.html

I am highlighting the key differences AM1808 has 2 PLL so mDDR/DDR2 clocking is different as compared to SDRAM clocking on AM17x. ALso AM1808 provide uPP, SATA, VPIF (camera input) and MCBSP while AM170x has more MCASP and supports eQEP.

the question regarding whether AM17x code base can be used on AM18x will depend on what software your customer was using, were they using Linux or bare-metal? If OS can you specify if they were using TI provided drivers and packages. Please provide details. If they were using CCS and TI compiler then they can continue to use the same on AM18x.

AM1808 the speed and internal memory supported is similar to AM17x but has more EDMA resources and faster external memory interface. From booting perspective they use the same mechanism using AIS format.

  • I see the questions here are primarily for software development and re-use, however it would be good to ensure that the customer is looking at AM18x datasheet and errata for any other design considerations.
E.g. 1) DDR layout guidelines - these are relatively more complex than SDRAM layout , so make sure they are following the guidelines in the datasheet.

    2) AM18x supports dual LVCMOS IOs, can support 1.8V IO design unlike AM17x. If customer plans to stick with 3.3V design, they should look at the advisory 2.3.7 www.ti.com/.../sprz313h.pdf , and ensure they are using and testing one of the listed workarounds.

    3) Look through SYSCFG registers for AM17x vs AM18x for additional functionality support on PU/PD configurations etc.

  • Hi Rahul,

    Thank you for your response.
For your question, they have used the Linux OS for AM1707. So, they will use the Linux for AM1808.

    Best regards.
