Question from field:

Customer is looking at a voice recognition application.I have found this design:

This uses analog microphones and a PCM1864 ADC.

Is it possible to use the C5532 which has 4 x I2C together with digital mics, to avoid the cost of the PCM1864, or is there any reason for selecting analog microphones plus PCM1864??

I see that Rogerio has meantioned 4 x I2C microphones. This should be 4 x I2S or PDM microphones.

Hi Anders,

You can inject a direct PDM stream into an I2S interface, but you will have to do the decimation in software since the bit stream needs to be handled accordingly. There is an application note on this located here based on the C5515 www.ti.com/.../sprac51.pdf Of source this will consume some MIPS per PDM input. Also keep in mind that it may not be stereo.

The easiest route would be to use I2S mics or use a codec such as the PCM1864 as in the LMB and CMB (liner/circular mic boards).

To be a bit more specific, the complete task would be to do voice recognition using the CC5515 and digital microphones (to save the cost of the ADC), using the IBM Watson like this design: www.ti.com/.../TIDEP-0083
Is that possible or does the C5515 lack the horsepower to do this?
The design is extremely price sensitive to Im looking for the cheapest possible way to do voice recognition...

Anders,

I don't see why the C5515 could not be used for this solution since we have a working demo on the C5545BP (w/ 2 mics). It should have enough horsepower in the 120MHz.
Let's take the 4 mic scenario with the C5515:

1) The C5515 has 4xI2S ports, however I2S3 is muxed with UART, so if UART is the bridge to the CC3220SF, then you can't use I2S3 for audio input.
2) The evm5515 would need some modifications to interface the mic array if you are trying to evaluate since there are no headers on the evm for I2S2.
I2S1 is pinned out on P2 and UART on P1.

Whats the lowest number of microphones needed to do a reliable voice recognition design? Is it possible to use only 1 microphone?

Anders,

Yes, you can get away with 1 microphone if needed. However, reliability will indeed increase with a higher mic count since the audio quality being presented to the voice recognition engine will be better quality.
