J721EXSOMXEVM: What RJ45 ports are the PRUs connected to?

Part Number: J721EXSOMXEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: J7EXPCXEVM, DRA829V, DRA829, DRA821

Hi All,

I have J721EXSOMXEVM (SoM) & J721EXCP01EVM (baseboard) for evaluation purposes.

I want to test the PRU-ICSSG Linux driver/performance.

But as far as I could so, no RJ45 (the baseboard has 5 of them) is connected the PRUs.

Documentation mentions the "GESI board" (J7EXPCXEVM) which might be what I need - but it's not spelled out clearly.

I want to be sure before ordering the part.

P.S. From other communication, I heard that PRUs are not going to be supported on the DRA829V anymore. Is there probably TSN-capable Eth implementation for Linux using the R5F cores?

  • Hi,

PRU-ICSSG is not supported on J721E devices and neither are the ports exposed on the EVM. See this FAQ for more details.

GESI is an general expansion card which is used to add RGMII and CAN port interfaces to both DRA821 and DRA829 (J721E) devices. It does not have any PRU-ICSS ports exposed.

If you are looking for PRU-ICSSG + Linux support then AM65x or AM64x are better choices.

That is correct, as mentioned above. PRU's won't be supported on DRA829. If you are looking for TSN support on R5F cores then that support will be enabled in future. At present only PTP support is available. See this related FAQ

On a side note, CPSW2G + Linux already supports a few TSN features like IET (Interspersed Express Traffic) and 802.1 Qav. See this documentation for more details.
