TMS320C5545: BOOST5545ULP adequate for audio synthesis/effects?

Part Number: TMS320C5545

Hi team,

My customer needs an EVM suggestion for an audio synthesizer/effects project, could you take a look at the requirements and advise on if the C5545BOOST is suitable?

"As our synthesizer will be voice controlled by a singer, we will need to do real time pitch detection. Do you think the C5545 processor will perform well with this task? Also, for our own build, what sort of audio interface would you recommend for audio synthesis and output? Last question, are there any floating point modules that may be somewhat affordable, or would that be overkill?"

Thank you,

Jason Rubadue

  • Hi Jason,

The team is notified. They will post their feedback directly here.

  • Jason,

    Sorry for the slow reply.

The answer to the C5545 being suitable is, it depends. Is it just pitch detection? any other functions needed?

Its a 120MHz (16-bit fixed point) device and proven to be able to do noise reduction, beam forming, etc as illustrated here http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDEP-0083.

We have various DSPLIB components that can apply filters to a signal. They could experiment with the C5545BOOST to see how well the DSP performs in their application. The EVM has a mic in and a headphone out so, you can experiment with applying filters from DSPLIB in some realtime input-output pitch detection test.

If you are looking for something with a bit more horsepower, check out the C6748 which is a 300-456 FP DSP.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your response. I am a member of the group and can describe a bit more about the project. Alongside pitch detection, we will need to output a chosen instrument through standard audio output (3.3mm, 1/4", and MIDI) to be played through speakers or headphones or sent into a postproduction software. We will need to allow the singer control over the ADSR of the instrument waveform, and some other features include pitch correction,  logarithmic frequency modulation for detune settings,  and voice control of the sound amplitude for the relative voice amplitude. The project is essentially a music synthesizer that is actuated and controlled by a singers voice. Thank you again for your previous feedback and any other feedback you may provide.

  • Hi Chad,

The C5545 is capable of doing pitch detection. Based on your description, I would recommend the C6748.

Please dig further into the device documentation referenced earlier for what the capabilities of the devices are, and how it matches up to your above description. Also keep in mind that the reference EVMs that we provide have audio interfaces. This will allow you to evaluate your software.
