AM5728: AM5728BABCXA / AM5718AABCXA

Part Number: AM5728
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM5718, AM5748

Hello community,

we are currently working on a AM5728 (AM5718 / AM5748) design (module).

And after a long time of period during design qualification suddenly occured a issue with some prototypes (5 of 20).

The behavior is those modules are booting sporadically and the logfiles are different:

### ERROR ### Please RESET the board ###

This behavior is just at 5 prototypes and if they can read the u-boot the linux is booting without any kind of problems.

We are doing either power-cycle or reset (PORZ) and the behaviour is always different like you can see based on the logfiles.

Therefore, when the MLO is loading the u-boot it always works without any trouble afterwards.

It seems that we have some kind of issue with the MLO, because if we use the MLO from the AM5718 the module with the AM5728 CPU will also works without any problems above.

I have attached the logfiles and also the MLO-files from the AM5728 and AM5718.

Maybe you have any kind of idea what cause to this problem.ank you in advance!

Best regards

  • Hi,

From the logs I guess you're booting your boards from MMC (eMMC or SD card?). First thing I'd advise is probe the MMC signals (all of them clk, data, cd, etc..), it is very possible that you have a bad connection (or bad sd card if you boot from sd card).

The MLO binaries are of little use to me, since I don't have your designs to test on my side. Can you check the differences between AM571x and AM572x initializations (boot media interface, DDR, etc..).

    Best Regards,
    Yordan

  • Hello Yordan,

yes we are booting from MMC1 (sd-card). Actually we already tried to boot from MMC2 (eMMC) and there is the same behaviour.

We already checked the signals and we only see that when there is an error it will also stop the data transfer.

I won't say that the connection between CPU and SD-card is bad because if we use another module on the same carrierboard it works fine.

And also the same module works fine with the MLO-binary from the AM51x.

The difference between our design is only the use of the second DDR-Controller at the AM5728 design. Because it's the same layout but other/more components placed (AM5728 instead of AM5718 and 4x DDR3L instead of 2x DDR3L).

Is it possible to check the MLO.

    Thank you in advance!

    Best regards,

    Juergen

  • Hi Juergen,

Since you're seeing problem only with 5 out of 20 devices, I suspect a hw problem and would suggest rechecking your hw design first. Consider the following documents:

    Yordan

  • Hello Yordan,

actually we have checked both documents, also our schematics (module + mainboard) were checked from one of your FAE.

If there were any kind of hw problems i would expect that the other 15 have also some kind of issues. But they are running stable.

The 5 modules will work fine if we change the MLO to the MLO from AM5718.

Therefore i dont expect any hw problems at the moment. Now we are trying to understand our SW.

In the meantime i tried to debug the cpu, but it dont work. We use the XDS200 USB JTAG debugger and Code Composer Studio v9.

We are getting always this error:

-----[An error has occurred and this utility has aborted]--------------------

This error is generated by TI's USCIF driver or utilities.

     The value is '-233' (0xffffff17).

    The title is 'SC_ERR_PATH_BROKEN'.

     The explanation is:

The JTAG IR and DR scan-paths cannot circulate bits, they may be broken.

An attempt to scan the JTAG scan-path has failed.

The target's JTAG scan-path appears to be broken

    with a stuck-at-ones or stuck-at-zero fault.

[End: Texas Instruments XDS2xx USB Debug Probe_0]

Maybe you know this kind of error.

    Thanks in advance.

    Best regards

  • Hi Juergen,

This JTAG error is a known one and is described here:

  • Hello Yordan,

we have solved the whole problem. At first the TDO was held at low the whole time because of wrong resistor placement.

The initial issue with booting that we had is also fixed.

We checked the DDR settings again and optimized them, after that suddenly the 5 of 20 modules also worked fine.

    Thanks a lot!

    Best regards,

    Juergen

  • Hi Juergen,

    Thanks for updating the thread.
