TMS320C6652: Do you have any reference design of power supply portion for TMS320C6652?

Part Number: TMS320C6652
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: 66AK2E05, LM10011, , TPS564201, TPS544C25

 Hello guys,

One of my customers is consideing using TMS320 C6652 for their new products.

They want TI to inform them which power supply ICs are recommended as C6652 power supply.

Could you please tell me any reference design or parts numbet of DCDC converter IC or LDO IC which suits for C6652?

Of course, they use VID(SmartReflex) function.

Your reply would be much appreciated.

 Best regards,

 Kazuya,

  •  Hello guys,

If you know, could you please tell me any recommended voltage superviser and sequencer IC too?

Your reply would be much appreciated.

     Best regards,

     Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

The only reference design we have specifically for the C6652 is the power supply design used on the EVM.  The KeyStone products share similar power needs so most of the power supply designs for KeyStone parts can be adapted.  There are a couple options listed in the design and development tab of the 66AK2E05 product page that could be useful to the customer.  This includes a more detailed discussion of the LM10011 design referenced in the Hardware Design Guide.

    Regards, Bill

  •  Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for your reply.

The customer thinks that 66AK2E05 is too higher price and high performance for their products.

So they want to any stand alone DCDC converter or PMIC for power supply of TMS320C6652.

     I attached a current TMS320C6652_power_supply_blockdiagram.

Could you please give me your comments or suggestions for the block diagram?

Your reply would be very helpful for the customer and me.

Thank you again and best regards,

     Kazuya.

  • Hi Kazuya,

I was not suggesting that the customer use the K2E.  I was only pointing to the power supply solution used for that device as an example of a power supply design using discrete supplies.  The solution could be scaled for use with the C6652 after the customer determined the power needs using the power estimation spreadsheet.

    Regards, Bill

  • Hi Kazuya,

Assuming that the current requirements meet the numbers provided by the power estimation spreadsheet, the block diagram appears to be a good solution but I have a few concerns.

I have never seen the TPS564201 implemented with the LM10011 to provide the variable core voltage.  This is a much simpler part that the TPS544C25 used in the K2E example. I suggest that you check with the power supply team to determine how to connect these components correctly for your application.

The current block diagram includes voltage supervisors to control the power sequencing but does not protect against the failure of a power supply output.  The C6652 must have all power supplies present in a timely manner and should not have a subset of supplies present for long periods of time.  The power supply solution shown will not shut off all the supplies if, for example, the core supply fails.  What is the customer's plan for a power supply failure scenario?

    Regards, Bill

  •  Hello Bill,

Thank you very much for your comments.

I will check their power failure scenario.

Could I ask you the following question?

    Q. If one of power supplies for C6652 is not powered up, how long are other power suppies shutted down within?

Is any specific time defined? Is 1ms~100ms range OK?

Thank you again and best regards,

     Kazuya.
