TMS320C6672: Speed Grade and Power Consumption

Part Number: TMS320C6672

Hi,

we are working with different c667x DSPs with the 1GHz speed grade. The power consumption is a little higher than calculated/expected with the power estimation spreadsheet.

The user guide states that you should select the speed grade of your device. However, there is no option like this in the spreadsheet.

Do you think upgrading to the 1.25GHz variant would reduce the power consumption?

Reducing the core speed to 800MHz also helped less than anticipated by the spreadsheet.

Regards,

Stefan

  • Stefan,

The speed grade is selected in the spreadsheet based upon the clock speed entered, whether 800-1000MHz or 1001 to 1250 or 1251 to 1400MHz.

No, selecting a higher speed grade device will increase the leakage power as the faster transistors tend to have higher leakage.

The C6672 is not the most power-efficient dual-core device in this family since it is the 2-core version of the C6678.  If power is a major concern, you should consider the C6655 or C6657.

  • Thank you for the fast reply.

That makes sense and helps me.

    thanks,
