TMS320C6657: J-Tag emulator recommendation

Part Number: TMS320C6657

Hi

Could you recommend J-Tag emulator for both of TMS320C6711 and TMS320C6657?

Customer has used Spectrum digital 510 USB emulator, Spectrum digital 560v2 USB emulator for debugging.

But there was the damage in emulator easily so customer wants more robust emulator.

Please recommend better emulator.

Thanks.

  • Hi David,

With the C6711, XDS support within more recent versions of CCS (post-CCS8.3) is going to be limited to the XDS560v2.

I understand that the customer has had previous exerpience with the SD 560V2 USB--in my experience these are robust but there have been cases where developers plug the wrong power supply into the debug probe...I don't know if that's the case here.  If so, another option might be a Blackhawk XDS560V2 (TMDSEMU560v2STM-UE, TMDSEMU560v2STM-U ) that pulls power from PoE (UE) or USB.

The XDS560v2 would certainly work for the C6657 as well.  In the case of the C6657, an XDS110 (https://www.ti.com/tool/TMDSEMU110-U) would also be a good solution--but the XDS110 does not support the C6711.

    Hope this helps.

  • Latest Code composer studio 10 has stopped support for XDS510 USB but besides that the emulator is still something that you can use with C6711 and C665x. I am not sure what caused the damage to the emulator and what HW it was used with but we have been using XDS560 Emulators for over 10 years without any issues.

More recently XDS110, XDS200  have been used widely for development and also as on board emulators. The C6657 EVM has an onboard XDS200 emulator and and an XDS560v2 emulation card.

For C6711, we would recommend sticking to older version on CCS (CCSv9 and older) that has support for older emulation drivers. I believe CCS only supports black hawk and spectrum digital XDS510 USB and XDS560v2
