Supply Voltage for TMS320VC5506

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320VC5506, TMS320VC5509A

Hi,

The component, which  I use at the same board with TMS320VC5506 requires to switch  1.2 V supply voltage to 1.5 V during programming and I want to use same supply for both 5506 and this component.

-Can you inform me about whether it is a problem if I use 1.5V supply voltage for 5506 for a while(during programming other component)?

-Do  I face a problem if I use TMS320VC5509A and 1.5 V supply voltage just during programming other component?

  • The 5506 is characterized/tested for operation only at 1.2V.  We cannot make any guarantees of performance outside that range.

The 5507 and 5509A are characterized/tested for operation at 1.2V, 1.35V, and 1.6V.  We only guarantee the proper device operation when you follow all datasheet requirements.

I don't know of a reason it would fail, but I can't guarantee it will succeed.  If you go that route you "void the warranty" so to speak.  That is, if you run into any "strange" behavior we will not be able to help you since you would be operating outside the tested conditions.

  • Hi Brad,

I had a question related the above post.

Generally, all datasheets have a absolute maximum operating condition voltage mentioned which is about +20% the actual maximum operating voltage.

SO, what is the maximum valid time upto which the device can sustain this absolute maximum voltage?

If I keep supplying it in short bursts (say while programming it,etc.) ,can the device sustain the voltage? Or is the voltage calculated  under some different test conditions?

    Regards,

    Sid

  • How often will it occur:

    • Once when the device is built
    • Occassionally, i.e. periodic firmware updates (quarterly, yearly, etc.)
    • Often, this will be typical usage

Can the 5506 be held in reset while this is happening?

There are a couple issues to consider:

    1. Will the 1.5V damage the device?
    2. Will the 1.5 cause the device to behave erratically?

For #2 that is undefined as we do not test outside the characterized conditions.  For #1, can you give an indication of how long the voltage would be changed?
