TRF370417: single-end LO drive

Part Number: TRF370417
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC3484, DAC5688, DAC3283

Dear Sirs;

We want to drive the TRF370417 LO port with a single-end 50 ohm signal. Since TRF370417 LO port is balance port, should we use a balun to transfer the single end LO to differential signal?

and there are two kind of balun, transmission type and trasformer type, which is most suitable for our purpose?

And will the LO signal balance influence the lo leakage performance?

THX!

Donald

  • Hi Donald,

Since TRF370417 LO port is balance port, should we use a balun to transfer the single end LO to differential signal?

Yes, this is recommended to suppress potential even order harmonics from your LO source. It could help reduce LO leakage (uncorrected) performance.

there are two kind of balun, transmission type and trasformer type, which is most suitable for our purpose?

We recommend that you check the frequency range of the balun to be suitable for your application. For architecture decisions, we will need to refer you to the balun makers.

  • Dear Kang:

    Thanks for your comments.

    1. Lo range is from 50MHz to 500MHz, IF range is 10 to 40MHz.

    2. You said: reduce LO leakage (uncorrected) performance. Should we correct LO leakage by adjusting I/Q signal's amplitude and phase? Or should we adjust LOP/LON's amplitude/phase?

    3. For the baluns, we have two choices:

    MACOM's ETC1-1-13, it's transmission type:

    ETC1-1-13

    MINICIRCUITS' TC1-1T, it's transformer type:

    TC1-1T

Which one is best for our purpose?

    4. Someone suggets use two ETC1-1-13 in series as:

Do you think that's good for our purpose?

    Thanks!

    Donald

  • Hi Donald

    2. You said: reduce LO leakage (uncorrected) performance. Should we correct LO leakage by adjusting I/Q signal's amplitude and phase? Or should we adjust LOP/LON's amplitude/phase?

Most of the DAC interfacing the TRF370417 will have LO adjustment capabilities. See examples such as the DAC5688, DAC3283, and DAC3484, etc.

If there is no balun driving the LO, the port will be single ended and will not be able to suppress even order harmonics. Even order harmonics will also include DC components, which is source of additional uncorrected LO leakage

    3. For the baluns, we have two choices:

    MACOM's ETC1-1-13, it's transmission type:

    ETC1-1-13

    MINICIRCUITS' TC1-1T, it's transformer type:

    TC1-1T

I think TC1-1T+ will have the best phase and amplitude balance performance than the ETC1-1. I would advise using it. Again, you will have to evaluate it and consult with balun manufacturer.

    4. Someone suggets use two ETC1-1-13 in series as:

I am not quite sure about the reasoning behind this. I cannot comment further

  • Dear Kang:

Thank you so much for your answer!
