AFE7071: Max input power

Part Number: AFE7071

What is the LO input power range for the AFE7071?  The "electrical characteristics" section of the datasheet lists the range as being from -5dBm to +5dBm.  The "typical performance plots" section of the datasheet seems to be characterizing the part at -5dBm, 0dBm, and +8dBm.  Why are there performance plots with an LO input that is 3dB higher than what is listed as the maximum?

  • The LO range for the device is quite forgiving.  The modulator operates with a wide range of LO drive strength.  The published limits are a bit of a "line in the sand" where reasonable limits are stated in the table.  In this case, the limit is set at 0 dBm +/- 5 dB.  In actuality, the LO drive can be higher with no reliability impact.  Drive strength can go up to 10 dBm or higher.  Most electrical performance parameters are not impacted by LO drive strength, except carrier feedthrough and sideband suppression.  The 8 dBm characterization point was deemed a good balance between the performance response as it related to those two parameters.  Generally speaking, I usually recommend to target a nominal drive strength at 8 dBm since it is a good balanced set-point and to give some leeway if the LO output power droops or the transmission line losses are higher than expected.
