TRF372017: VCO_bias setting

Part Number: TRF372017
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF3722

hi,

We are considering setting Vcc_Vco2 = 3.3V

We’ve noticed that the open loop VCO phase noise may be improved substantially, if a modified  VCO_bias setting (reg 0x05[13:10]) is used .

Do you recommend trimming the VCO_bias set-up in order to improve phase noise performance?

thansk a lot in advance

  • Vincenzo:

Yes, the VCO bias can be trimmed/adjusted to improve performance.  The datasheet reports that for 3.3V VCC_VCO2 the setting should be 400 uA.  For 5.0V it should be 600 uA.  Those are guidelines and not set in stone.  This parameter can be freely adjusted to get best performance at the frequency of operation.

Note, you can also check out the TRF3722 device which offers slightly improved phase noise performance with a lower modulator common mode voltage.
