INA226EVM: Is it possible to use INA226EVM for high speed current sensing applications?

Part Number: INA226EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226,

Hi,

we have a sensor node, which has very fast changing current characteristic while RF transmission and reception. We would like to characterize it with INA226EVM. Unfortunately, the graphs is refreshing @1.2seconds interval, although INA226 supports conversion times up to 140us. Is it somehow possible to use INA226EVM for high speed power characterization?

Best Regards

  • Hello,
The INA226EVM is limited to the slow sample rate by the hardware used for the microcontroller. The SCL speed is 400kHz, but the sample rate is determined primarily by the device->micro->USB 1.1 HID interface protocol->PC->USB 1.1 HID interface protocol->micro->device. It is not set up for high bandwidth transfer like some other TI EVMs are. Historically I used an FPGA solution with a USB2.0 bulk transfer protocol and a RAM FIFO to move large volumes of high speed data. There are TI and other microcontrollers that can do this as well, but currently this is not supported natively by the INA226EVM.
  • Thanks Jason,
I think we will develop our on solution using I2C on EVM board.
