DRV5011: Detect presence of different metals

Part Number: DRV5011
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV5055

Hi All

Have a customer who wants to detect a nickle brass jack. Can our sensor detect this material?

Thanks

Jeff

  • Jeff,

There is no direct way to detect various metals using a Hall sensor that I'm aware of, but if a sufficiently large change in magnetic field can be generated at the sensor location when the jack is plugged in, then detection is possible. Nickel is a magnetic material and bringing it near a magnet will cause the flux density around the magnet to change. If the jack is brought sufficiently close the magnet then the magnet may even move. So I would think that by strategically placing the DRV around the magnet/jack arrangement, detection would be possible. An analog sensor such as the DRV5055 can also be considered (at least in the initial prototyping phase) for resolving small changes in field.
