AWR1642: data format of captured ADC data using RadarStudio+TSW1400

Part Number: AWR1642

I used RADAR studio and TSW1400 to capture ADC raw data. the data is saved off to C:\ti\mmwave_dfp_00_07_00_04\rf_eval\radarstudio\PostProc\adc_data.bin. What is the format of the .bin file? I used 1 TX 4 RX and 16bit ADC. thanks! -Xinsi Lin

Please check AWR1xxx Data Path Programmer’s Guide for details about packaged data over LVDS lane.

Section 4.1.4.2 Format Mapping in that documents talks about AWR1642 data mapped to LVDS lanes.

Hello Xinsi Lin,
The bin file saved from HSDC pro would have the data in sequential order . If you are using 16 bit complex the order of data would be (for N samples per chirp):
RX1-I sample 0 , RX1 Q sample 0 , RX1 Isample1 , RX1 Qsample1 .....Rx1 I sampleN-1 , RX1 Q sample N-1

After 1 chirp data the second chirp data follows.

What should i do to capture ADC raw data from AWR1642 by using MMWAVE-DEVPACK and TSW1400?
I have read RadarStudio_User's_Guide , but I still have no idea to do it.

Hello Vivek Dham,

Following your advise, I refer to training.ti.com/mmwave-sensor-raw-data-capture-using-tsw1400-board. In Radar Studio(v1.7.4.0), mmwave-sensor-raw-data-capture-using-tsw1400-board suggest me to select the Application/User UART, Buad rate 115200.

But when I select Buad rate 115200, I can't connect SPI. The "SPI connect" button was stuck.

Then I refer to Radar_Studio_User's_Guide, it suggest me to set the Buad rate to 921600.

When I set the Buad rate to 921600, I can connect SPI successfully.

I'm confused. Because when I do the mmw demo and capture demo, the Buad rate of the Application/User UART is set to 115200.

Why do I connect the SPI successfully in the Radar Studio until I set the Application/User UART to 921600?

Hello Zhicheng,
The UART rate depends on the rate set by the application. The mmw demo application sets a 115200 baud rate while the radar studio application sets it to 921600 kbps.

Hi Vevek,

I want to clarify more about data format topic.

When default RadarStudio configures 16 bit complex the order of data should be:

RX1-I sample 0 , RX1-Q sample 0 , RX1-I sample 1 , RX1-Q sample 1 .....Rx1-I sample N-1 , RX1-Q sample N-1 , RX2-I sample 0 , RX2-Q sample 0 ……

Questions:

1. The above data order is correct or not.

2. Is there any header between frames?

3. What is the first sample as following figure? Does they align with big-endian or little-endian?

Hello OC,
The above data format you have mentioned is correct. In radar studio no frame headers are present, you know the number of chirps you have configured and number of samples in each chirp. Using that you identify the frame boundary.
The data is in little endian.

Hi Vivek,

I installed all sw described in training material and connected the DevPack and the EVM to PC through USB cables. Connected a power supply to the EVM and powered it up. Nothing happens. In Windows Device Manager of Windows 10 , the COM ports not appear .

What should I do?

Hi Vivek,

My customer used the AWR1642 EVM+TSW1400 to capture ADC raw data, with only Rx1 and Rx3 enabled, got below data view, seems the stored data format is Rx channel interleaved, it cannot be understood as below format. Per my understand AWR1642 only support non-interleaved data output, below data view confuse me. Would u pls help have a look at it?
