OPT3002: Thermal pad soldering required?

Hello!

I'm wondering if the thermal pad has to be soldered to the PCB for the sensor to function correctly?

We are using another ambient light sensor that is pin compatible with the OPT3002 with the exception that it does not have a thermal pad.

We would like to use the OPT3002 as a drop-in replacement for that sensor if the thermal pad does not have to be soldered.
