TMP116: Is there standard/good way to create a temperature probe using a surface mount IC?

Part Number: TMP116
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMT01, , TMP117

The E2E blog shows exactly what we are planning to do - put an IC into a metal probe.  However, the TI probe with pigtail connections (LMT01) does not meet our required functional specifications.  The TMP116 series does meet functional specs, but is a surface mount design, so it isn't clear whether this would be a good option for putting in a probe.  Is there a good option for using the TMP116NAIDRVT (or is there a packaging with different connection options) in a probe instead of surface mount?

  • Dear Phillip -

Welcome to E2E and thanks for posting - with regards to your questions - when making a probe (we do not make them, just the temp sensors that go inside), you must have wires coming out for connection to your controller - so this means that you should be able to use SMT parts on a small PCB and also have mechanically stable connection for your wires. The TMP116 would work, the TMP117 in DSBGA package may be the best solution, if you want to remain with a digital interface.
