IWR6843AOPEVM: Capturing data in standalone mode

Part Number: IWR6843AOPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843, IWR6843ISK, IWR6843AOP

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Can IWR6843AOPEVM be used to capture data and transfer it to PC without MMWAVEICBOOST and DCA1000? Are these two a requirement to do so?

According to the User guide, when IWR6843AOPEVM is used in Modular mode, the UART can either be routed to the SICP2015, which displays the data on themmWave visualizer, or to other devices connected to the USB interface. The UART data can also be routed to the CC2642R2F, which transmits data to a wireless device through Bluetooth. Does this mean UART alone can be use to capture and display data to PC?

Thanks and regards,

Art

  • Hello,

We have various demos that work in standalone mode by sending UART data through the UART-USB transceiver to the PC. The most common and simple is the out of the box demo. This is a demo that starts chirping the sensor, then point cloud data can be viewed in real time.

The DCA1000 is mainly used for gathering raw ADC samples. The radar in standalone mode can not do this.

Find the out of box demo and other demos we offer in the Industrial Toolbox hosted on TI Resource Explorer: https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=ANNtaxZONu0PbSaUU.YiPQ__VLyFKFf__LATEST

  • Thanks Sabeeh.

    Customer have a follow-up inquiry.

After going through the out of box demos following your link, customer noticed that "100m Outdoor People Tracking and False Detection Filtering" demo was only compatible with IWR6843ISK, and not with IWR6843AOPEVM. IWR6843ISK is a sensor evaluation kit based on IWR6843 device with long-range antenna. IWR6843AOPEVM is a sensor evaluation kit based on IWR6843AOP device which already has antenna on package. Does this imply that this AOP is too small for long range detection (up to 100m)?

Because it is imperative for them to have a small, compact, fully integrated package (which IWR6843AOP provides), but we also need longer range capability (at least 30m). Accuracy is not important (1-2 meters is ok).

    Thanks and regards,

  • The Long range people counting demo is antenna dependent. The ISK antenna has 15 degree angular resolution compared to the AOP's 30 degree in azimuth. The ISK's antenna also has a larger gain allowing it to see further. Please see the antenna database for more specifications.

For the AOP, I would recommend trying the People Counting Demo. The provided chirp configurations are not supported for 30m, however, documentation is provided so that you may understand necessary parameters to enable the demo for 30m detection.
