Hi Alex,

In page.10 of ALS Application Guide, we would like to minimize window size. Could we use the center point of sensor to design window size?

Hi Hardy,

Center line as shown will give the angle where only 50% of the sensor is illuminated rather than 100% illumination. Both are useful metrics to look at. You can see the app note recommends designing to maximize the 100% illumination angle.

Hi Alex,

In my opinion, the sensor only with 50% illuminance when window size is decreased by using 45 degree line from center point. But customer will do the calibration to correct the value of illuminance. So, I think it still can work. How do you think?

Hi Hardy,

Calibration will work well for attenuation compensation. This is for when the intensity of light is reduced across all angles, such as when using as dark glass. While this can also help for holes, a hole will reduce the field of view. With reduced field of view because of too small a hole the sensor can have tunnel vision where light at 0 degrees all makes it to the sensor but light at another angle such as 10 or 20 degrees is not seen. This will not be addressed by calibration so needs to be considered. The link I provided mentions a tool we have to checking this. It will allow you to check the angular effect. If angular effect is understood calibration may be used to increase device accuracy.
