TMCS1101: Current Limit

The TMCS1101 is a potential replacement for the above named part, but you are correct in that there are some differences in the physicalities and specs of the devices, including a 2x better accuracy performance. I would advise you to check out the datasheet for the device to ensure that the differences are acceptable for your design. 

The answer to your question regarding current range often comes down to PCB design in addition to the device itself. In short, if your overall design is such that you are not exceeding the max junction temperature Tj = 150°C, and your PCB is designed to dissipate the heat at Ta = 50 °C, then yes, currents in excess of 20A should be achievable. Below is the continuous current derating curve for the from the datasheet, using the TMCS1101EVM as its reference, which shows that this is the case. Note that for the EVM layout, at a controlled 50C ambient, >25A continuous is achievable.

The current listed on the product page is simply a conservative estimate over temperature based on our EVM. That said, a true picture of data, I would recommend that you refer to the EC tables in the datasheet for "guaranteed" numbers, which is on page 9, as well as the derating curve in the datasheet as I show above.
