TMP461: Remote Sense Diode Issue

Part Number: TMP461

We have a design using a TMP461AIRUNT-S temperature sensor with an external sensing diode. We have discovered that when using our selected diode, a 1N4148WS the device always reports "maximum hot".  However, if f we tack a 2n2222 transistor (wired as a diode) in place of the 1N4148, the sensor reports the correct temperature.

Tacking a 3-port transistor onto pads for the 1N4148 is somewhat problematic for production.
So, before we begin hacking the boards, do you know why the 1N4148 wouldn't work when the 2n2222 does? Also, can you identify a diode that would work? It would be easier to swap diodes than to tack a transistor onto the existing pads.

Thank you
