LM60: Temperature-sensitive surface

Good day.

Our customer would like to know what is the temperature-sensitive surface of the LM60 sensors since they need to measure the surface temperature of rock samples. Which part of the sensor would be better to put in contact with the rocks - either the black part or the metal pins with leads? In other words, which one actually senses the temperature?

  • Hi Carlo,

    Both LP and DBZ package variants of LM60 have the best thermal path via Pin 3 GND. That said, any way that you can make contact is going to help.

    Our customer would like to know the best method in making contact with the temperature sensor and their sample which is rocks. Here are the two scenario:

    1.The contact is between rock samples and sensor with the flat side of the black part of the sensor itself (all the pins will not be in actual contact with the rock surface then, but slightly higher). Would that imply a significant difference in the temperature recorded?

    2.With the other way around, if they kept the pins adherent to the rock surface, the black part would remain a little higher (because the pins would be clamped to the surface, so that the black body naturally gets up). Which solution is to be preferred?

    I'm not sure I follow your description of the application. Generally speaking, we have to make concessions to the practical uses of the end equipment and cannot locate the sensor ideally. There are trade-offs between accuracy, response time, and sensor complexity. I don't expect different mounting points of the same sensor to make much of a difference. I would urge the customer to make the best contact they can, stop worrying about it, assemble the system with LM60 and see if it meets their needs. It will probably be fine! Slight smile
