AFE3010: To meet UK standard BS 7671:2018/ BS IEC 62955

Hi TI,

The AFE3010 is designed to meet UL943 but can it meet the Hot-to-ground leakage and Neutral-to-ground leakage in BS 7671:2018 standard?

I assume the open-circuit fault in PEN conductor stated in BS 7671 is equal to neutral to ground leakage, right?

Also, due to the load characteristic, a EV charger, it require BS IEC 62955 complying residual direct current detecting device. Can AFE3010 detect such "direct current" leakage?

Hello Edmund,

The AFE3010 was designed to sense Type AC and/or Type A (half-rectified) faults. I will look into the mentioned standard and provide a response within the next 24 hours.

As for detecting direct current, the device can work with detecting DC faults; however, the current transformer would need be DC coupled somehow.

Hey Edmund,

Unfortunately, the AFE3010 was not designed to alone comply with type B faults. Maybe two AFE3010 devices could be used, one for AC/A and the other for DC faults. I am not an expert in this standard, but I can certainly help with feasibility of using two or just one AFE3010 to complete your system.

Please advise how to do the type b? Type A can be done by standard RCD with reasonable price, but type b RCD is much expensive.

Hey Edmund,

I am sorry, but I am not an expert in type B/EV charging systems. However, if you can provide me the specific electrical requirements for a type B system, then I can help connect how AFE3010 can be used with these. System-level considerations need to be addressed as well. I think the AFE3010 could be used to help sense the AC leakages, but it can't do both AC and DC faults. If you could get a DC coupled current-transformer, then a second AFE3010 could be used to sense this output signal for the DC leakage.

If the second AFE3010 option is not used, then a a discrete circuit could be built. Maybe the following TI board can provide some ideas.
